Well we finally got around to throwing a turbo setup on our chevelle, which we have been talking about doing for a year or more. For a little back history on the car, it was bought new in 1971 by my grand father, my dad inherited it in 1998, and the car was 100% original, 307 sbc 3 speed manual on the column. Well since we have had the car its had a few different setups and almost every power adder we could think of. The car went to a stock block n/a 383, then it got a plate kit, to a pro race fogger, then finally a weiand 177 cu. In. Underhood blower. Then in 2007 we built the current motor which is a dart block 415 cu. in. Sbc, ported brodix track 1 heads, brodix intake, and a .680 lift 4-7 swap cam. The car has also seen tons of different fuels, from 93, to cam 2, to c16, to methanol, and finally to e85. The car has full interior and weighs in at 3580lbs with me in it.

The car went 9.63 at 142mph with the 383 with 325 shot thru the pro race fogger. With the 415 it went 9.61 on a 225 shot thru a big shot plate kit.

So far the build is going good, and most of the fab work is done. The hotside parts started out as a set of ebay sbc headers that we cut, changed, and welded to fit the car. Everything is v-banded, and the crossover is made out of 2.5" steel. The main problem we ran into was we have to make everything! Lol. No one makes a turbo kit for these cars. But it looks good so far. The turbo is a borg warner S480 80mm T6 turbo with their extended tip race compressor cover. We just finished the downpipe which is 5" steel.

Our goal is around 1000hp once we switch the cam to a custom grind turbo cam. The car will be ran on a 295 M/T ET street drag radial, on e85.

PICS WILL BE UP LATER....thanks a lot guys! :) let us know what you think.

is E-85 really that effective at cooling IAT's. ive never really heard that before like with alcohol and methanol and whatnot. seems like youd get some more out of it with a good A2A intercooler

Yea there are a lot of flat top n/a small block cars running around on E85 in the mid-low 10s....we are planning to run water/meth injection just for peace of mind. Especially since its around 11-11.5:1 static compression....:/ lol. There is a guy on ESC with a small block turbo S10 on E85 that went 9.12...its just tricky to get used to.

Hell when our chevelle was on alcohol with the blower, after a pass you could wipe the frost off the blower...and the car could be driven anywhere...lol. E85 is just nice cause it works great and its like 2.30 a gallon! :D

Overall plans for the car are:

Switch the gear (it has a 4.11 in it...)
Disc brakes (it has 4 wheel manual drums and traps low 140s)
Switch the cam
Get the converter redone (maybe)
Switch to a glide (has a rmvb TH350 w/ brake)
And maybe put a parachute on it...

soo how are you controlling boost

Metcalf Racing
09-30-2010, 04:44 PM
I just wish since you were buying a new turbo you would have bought a little bit bigger of a turbo. Your dad says he wants to only run around 15lbs and it won't be able to reach your 1000 hp goal at the wheels on 15lbs

SLWB16hatch
09-30-2010, 04:50 PM
i'll have enough to cover you Craig.......you better get working on white trash buddy......lol

Metcalf Racing
09-30-2010, 04:54 PM
See I was just conversing with you. I wasn't running my mouth. But with an 80mm you'll be competition for sure but you won't have anybody out right covered and that's just on the real. You guys should have bought at least an 88

what size is the motor 400+? craigs right should went with a 91

SLWB16hatch
09-30-2010, 08:08 PM
it will be controlled off wastegate. its supposed to be in tomorrow, so we can finish welding all the hotside parts, and get the motor pulled to run to oil lines. the return is going in the pan so we need to pull the motor to finish it up...

its a 415. and yes we could have went with a 91 if we wanted to spend another 1400 on top of what we spent for the turbo alone...this is a budget build....for now. and yea he is just wanting to take it slow for a while, but there have been plenty of cars with less motor and less parts making 1000 with the exact same turbo...so we will just have to see what happens.

...might get started sometime this weekend....

dsmawd350
09-30-2010, 08:12 PM
Is there a flange somewhere i dont see? all the hotside looks wraped and done but no wastegate?

Metcalf Racing
09-30-2010, 08:15 PM
What I keep telling you is your engine size doesn't have anything to do with making 1000hp. Your motor is a stand for the turbo. Your car can only make the hp the turbo can produce. And it may make 1000hp at the fly wheel. It will be hard. But I don't see it at the wheels. You might get 900 but man 900 is a lot

dsmawd350
09-30-2010, 08:16 PM

www.forcedinductions.com they have a garret budget unit GT-91 for 1349.99

Metcalf Racing

But then again it won't do that at 15lbs. Jimsvt made 1016wrhp with a pt88 on 25lbs. So an 80mm on 15lbs is unrealistic

132 more cubes hes got lol

dsmawd350
09-30-2010, 08:23 PM
which is more reason he could use a larger turbo. Id venture to say a 283 with a 80mm would be more efficient than a 415 with an 80mm

2 precision billet wheel ball bearing 76's :) or slap a 91 or thumper 94 on there

if you were to cal Jose@forced inductions tomorrow and tell him your combo im sure he'd tell that 80mm is gonna choke that 415 up big time on the turbine side

It will run low 9's I'd say @ high 140's low 150's. That's fast. Just hp numbers are wrong
