Is it even worth building a 393 or better to go to the 408. it will be going in XR4TI. The car should weigh in around 2600-2800 pounds after doing v-8 swap. It will be used mostly for street duty with manual trans.

I would think the only reason to do the 393 vs 408 is cost. So if you dont have the cash to build the 408, do the 393 and have fun. Just a question, how tight will the 351windsor swap be? seems like I remember the 302 swap being pretty straight forward but dont remember there being alot of room.

the only issues are firewall to core support. the engine compartment is actually designed to house a 5.0. they were called the xr8 sold in south africa and australia.there is actaully a guy that is selling kits to do the 4.6 dohc swap also

understand about the XR8 (have seen one here in the states a few years back) and thats what makes the 302/5.0 an easy swap, just thought with the tall&wider windsor, wondering about the fitment thats all.

There are guys swapping in 4.6 DOHC motors so a Windsor is breeze in comparison.

Shouldn't be any cost difference between the 393 and 408. I would absolutely go 408 if not bigger.

69-74 blocks are supposed to be stronger. They are visibly thicker between the mains. The 71-74 is even better as it's a true 9.5" deck compared to the 9.4x of the earlier 351w. These blocks are also non-roller blocks so that is something you'll want to keep in mind. They also use a 2 piece rear main cap which has been somewhat challenging for me and oil pans.
94+ blocks are factory roller blocks which is really nice, but not as meaty as the early blocks.
Depending on what you want to do, I'd stock with those generations.

blocks with the date stamping starting with C9 or DO seem to sonic test the best that i have seen..
the d1 and up stuff is pretty much all the same. but remember the newer they get, the thinner they get:(

I disagree, most can build a 393 with just the purchase of a new crank and using parts they already have. Which would help keep the cost down vs buying a complete kit.

I agree with the others, pick you up a 70's 351w block if you really are worried about strenght. But in your first post you say "mostly street duty" so I am guessing that just about any 351w block will handle the power level of a "street car" :D so I would consider going with a roller block (just so you can take advantage of off-the-shelf roller cams)

on average how much can a stock block handle horsepower wise.

Thats really a trick question, there is no magic number at which a block breaks (i.e. 599 the block will take it but at 601 it splits) and many things play into it (n/a? or power adder? nitrous or blower? motor mounts or plate? etc) and all cores are not equal. but I have seen more than a few 351w based motors make 550-600 hp with "nothing special " stock blocks.

this is what i have in mind, i just ordered scat stroker crank. I also have stock length scat lightweight i beam rods and factory 302 forged pistons. What i want to do is run trick flow high ports milled to 58 cc and run this set up on e85, as far as the cam goes i will go with a custom grind for my set up. Oh yeah and this set up will be carbed with custom e85 carb, i am wanting to stay n/a but will use nos if needed

sounds like you have a plan and the 393 should work out for you.
