I'm a big fan of pocket knives...i used to collect them when i was younger. I've always got a blade of some sort on me. I just recently bought (another) Kershaw Leek. If you're not familiar with these knives most of Kershaw's knives anymore feature a speedsafe assisted opening mechanism which is essentially as close to a legal switchblade as you can get. There's a loophole in the law or something that makes them legal because you have to initiate the opening process before the spring takes over which i guess is different from a true push button switchblade.
Anyways..i've had this knife before and loved it, ended up losing it at a job. It's a great little knife...comes razor sharp and holds an edge pretty well. The only thing you really need to do to them are flip the pocket clip around so it clips in your pocket point up when folded (that's how i prefer them anyways) and tighten the safety lock so it doesn't lock on its own. Both can be done with a tiny torq bit.
The last one i had was all aluminum and shiny...this time i opted for the tungsten coated version.

The one i really wanted was the one with the G10 handle but i haven't seen one in a store yet, and i wanted it with a tungsten coated blade which i'm not sure if it's even available that way. Overall i'd give this knife a 9 out of 10...it would be a 10 if the design of the lock was different...they should've put it on the spine of the handle like some Buck knives are so you can unlock and flick it open with one action.

In other news since we're talking knives...i'm also a huge Spyderco fan. One of their knives is WAY up on my purchase list but i'm not sure if i'll ever spend the cash to buy one and i'm not even sure if they're still available because they where limited production. This is one for self defense...

I had the g10 Leek, wasnt impressed. Sold it. I carry a Spyderco Caly III plain edge (vg10) everyday. Its the best EDC knife in my opinion. Also have an Adventura (sweet) and Tenacious (beater). Sold a Mini Manix and s30v Native a while back.

Yeah i also have a Spyderco Native in G10 with a spyder edge and i love that knife but i get sick of dealing with sharpening a serrated edge so i get reluctant to use it. I have a feeling i may trade the Leek for another Spyderco as i'm a little undecided if i'm completely sold on it yet...it's a fine knife though.

Yeah i have a few of those too. My only gripe with those is that none of them no matter what the brand seem to have a knife that will hold an edge. Gerber in particular seems way too soft to hold any kind of decent edge. If i can't shave my arm i'm not happy with it. I did have a Leatherman Wave that i really liked but lost it.

95% of Gerber knives are junk. What steels are you thinking doesnt hold an edge? I prefer VG10, some S30V and AUS8.

I'm not real sure about specs...i'm not THAT much of a knife junky...i just know the 2 Gerber multi-tools i have suck ass as far as the knife holding an edge...and come to think of it i remember the screwdriver tips always stripping (the phillips head always got chewed up). I've never owned one of their knives, only the tools.
All i know is my Spyderco seems to hold an edge nicely, and i've had a couple Bucks that held an excellent edge. I also have this oddball Beretta (same company that makes guns) that doesn't say what type of metal the blade is but it holds an edge better than anything i've ever sharpened..it only says Japan on the blade. Maybe it's some awesome folded 1000 times metal

I got a Schrade Extreme for a present and I lost it. So now I have been looking for a nice kershaw. My friend has a PIRANHA EXCALIBUR https://www.knifemart.com/browse.asp?MOVE=NEXT&cat=16&CurrentPage=2&path=1,16&ManuID=&KeepPage=1&OrderBy=Name auto out the front and that thing is sweet. Is it illegal to carry automatic knifes?

Yes in Ohio automatic knives are illegal but somehow the assisted opening knives aren't. I'm not sure where that particular knife falls. I'd say if you just push a button and it opens then it's classed as a switchblade and is illegal. Ironically enough i believe police are allowed to carry them.

Here's the next one on my purchase list if i can ever swallow the price..
Doug Ritter's RSK Mk1™ Folding Knife
http://www.equipped.com/rsk_mk1.htm
It's based off the Benchmade Griptillion but with a custom designed blade.

Well, i ended up taking the Leek back. It wasn't that it wasn't a solid quality knife, i just couldn't get used to the feel of it and the assisted open...if you've ever carried a Spyderco then you probably know what i mean when i say it just isn't necessary. I found myself putting more thought into actually trying to use the assisted open part than i usually spend opening one of my Spydercos. If the thumb stud was more pronounced it might be easier to open that way than flicking the little bump on the spine of the blade.
Anyways i caved and bought another Spyderco...what can i say they make badass knives. This time around i went with a Delica 4 plain edge, VG-10 with a FRN handle:
http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/cinemasupplies_2109_78479174
I'd like to carry something a little bigger but i just don't feel "legal" enough. I wanted the Endura 4 which is like the big brother to the Delica but it just felt too big for every day carrying. I still would suggest the Leek...it's a great knife. I just think i'm too stuck on the Spyderco features to switch.

Hey David....have you checked out any Benchmade knives? These are all I buy anymore. The only bad thing about them is the price. I always get the D2Tool steel....can be a little hard to sharpen but once its sharp it stays that way for awhile....if you think of it check one out sometime.

Yeah i almost bought a Griptillian but damn the price was hard to swallow. Granted there are Spyderco's in the same price range that i want too but i believe i'd be hesitant to really use a knife that cost anywhere close to $200. I think some of these knife steels are a bit overkill too. I spent 2 hours yesterday whittling on hardwood branches and the VG-10 was still sharp enough to shave hair off my arm, and you don't have to spend another 2 hours honing the edge back up.
There's actually a big feud going on between Spyderco and Benchmade because Benchmade ripped off the round hole patent from Spyderco. Scroll down to under the pic and read why http://paulberetta.com/

I never even thought about the patent on the hole before lol. The 2 folders I have by Benchmade have the thumb stud. I have a fixed blade I use for field dressing deer and love it....I get it sharp one time before season and it's good until the end of season. I have a buddy that has a few spider co's and really like them too....one of them might be on my santa's wish list this year!

There are at least 3 really badass updated versions of Spyderco's lineup coming out hopefully before Christmas...the Native 5, Caly 3.5 and Sage 3, all already great knives that are getting a little refinement.

I carry a leek now and like it very much. Quick opening, super slim, and light.
It will eventually be replaced by a Benchmade Infidel.

Well i finally checked out Cecil Clark Cutlery down in Newport. Aside from being cluttered to hell and back and kind of messy, it's a good shop with a pretty large selection. They didn't have a lot of the Spyderco knives i wanted to see in person, but they did have one that i've been dying to get and they actually gave me NIB trade in value on the Spyderco Delica 4 that i had just bought so i couldn't pass up getting this baby:
http://www.spyderco.com/pix/products/med/C113CF_M.jpg
It's a bit more expensive than i wanted since i use it for everything, but the carbon fiber handle, the quality and ergonomics are second to none and the ZDP189 steel holds an edge like you wouldn't believe, although it can be a PITA to sharpen if you let it get really dull (diamond stones work wonders though). You really have to hold this knife to appreciate how it fits your hand.
I gotta thank Walter for putting the bug in my ear on this knife...if he hadn't posted about it in this thread i probably would've over looked this knife.

Its the best knife on the face of the planet lol. I would have gotten the carbon version but I didnt want the zdp189. I should buy a CF version, swap blades and sell the zdp189/g10 hybrid.

Ya know i was hesitant after reading the horror stories about how hard it is to sharpen, but honestly with diamond stones it's a breeze. I don't know how you do yours but i use a Lansky guide system...i can't sharpen free hand to save my life and the guide setups have worked great for me and always give me a hair popping edge. It does take a lot more work with the ZDP and you have to use diamond stones to set the bevel and angle but other than that it's no different than VG10 other than it holds an edge way longer. If you give a quick once over with an extra fine stone every now and then to keep it razor sharp you'll never have to worry about the difficult sharpening unless you end up using the hell out of it one day and really dull it down.
You wouldn't have any problem selling the hybrid...there's a lot of guys who don't like the smoothness of carbon and would be all over a combo like that. You could probably get close to retail for it too.

Always been a fan of Gerber. The applegate is my favorite from them.
Right now I am anxiously awaiting my custom made snakewood handle knife by 53 year knife maker Ernie Self of Texas. My knife is being put on hold because he is making a guitar strap and knife for Hank Williams Jr. Can you believe that? Met Ernie at my moms estate sale and been to his shop a few times. Awesome guy! Awesome knives.

My experience with Gerber knives is that their steel is so soft it doesn't hold an edge worth a crap. Maybe it's just me.
Now i will say though, a lot of Buck knives are very nice for the money. I used to carry a Buck Rush and it wasn't bad at all especially for the price. Granted it was no Caly 3 though :D

Well, hopefully this doesn't turn into a silly debate, but lets just say you and i are passing on the street and i'm a bad guy and i'm gonna attack you. You don't know i'm armed or dangerous. You can pick where you choose to carry your concealed carry handgun, but suffice to say it's hidden and you have to get through whatever clothes are hiding it to pull it, aim it, and effectively use it.
Meanwhile, i have this SOB tucked back up my forearm, opened and ready to use (Spyderco Civilian). You better pray to whatever God you believe in that i don't get a slash in on your torso because you'll be on your way out before your gun is ever drawn:

Ask any cop how the "bring a knife to a gun fight" scenario really plays out. Unless you get the jump on the knife wielder at a distance and score a hit, you're in serious trouble.
