Went fishing yesterday with my mom and brother. We usually fish for catfish but we're happy catching anything that bites. It was early morning and sprinkling and nothing was biting except bluegills. So i had my vintage '89 Zebco 33 playing around catching tiny bluegills for bait...i was pulling them in left and right so my mom put one on for bait and had it deadline. Seconds later i hook into a catfish, probably the biggest i've ever caught, on the WRONG rod to be catching catfish on (6lb test line). I got him all the way to the bank....he was a monster....then he snapped my line. I was pissed. Then next thing i know mom hooks into something. She's pulling it in and it's bending her rod like crazy and it's a pretty good size rod. We figure it's a good size cat until it gets close enough to the bank that i can see it, and i think it's a carp until it's mouth comes out of the water...then we're all pretty shocked at the size of this bass, not to mention catching it deadline on a live bluegill.

Mom has 20 or so years experience of deli work and is pretty accurate with judging weight (from years of slicing meats). She says he felt like about 7-8lbs. Didn't catch a damn thing after that except more bluegills.

I like catching bass but i can't bass fish for crap. I have no idea what i'm doing and i just seem to catch bluegills. That said, i am the bluegill F'in master. No kidding, i can pull them in almost instantly  It keeps me entertained while my other rods are laying on the bottom waiting for the cats to bite.

Dude momma has been showing the boys how it's done for YEARS when it comes to fishing

My grandparents are like white skinned eskimos or something...fishing is just in their blood. Mom has been fishing since she was old enough to hold a rod.

Nice fish! I caught a 7lb once and it was 25 1/2" long. Such a nice fish and I ate it! Congrats to your mom on one helluva fish! Maybe we can start a big fish thread with some pics since its that time again!

Geezus 25 inches long?? Maybe mom's a bit off or was a little excited when she quoted her weight lol. I'd say it's about 5 or maybe 6lbs if yours was 7. He was more fat than long but i'd say he was every bit of 18 inches.

It was a pretty weird day. When i hooked the catfish, i was about 8 feet off the bank by some rocks in water that couldn't have been 3 feet deep. I think he was hunting for bluegill babies or something. I've never heard of catching a bass on live bait fishing on the bottom either.

I caught mine while reeling in a bluegill at a small farm pond. Just luck! I got a fish thread started so go post some of them big cats and tell us some fish stories!

This was at Miami Meadows in Milford...it's a big park up there. They have a nice size lake and there's some big fish in there but they haven't been biting this year yet.

I've caught lots of bass on live bluegill on top and bottom. Great way to catch cat and bass. That's a nice one by momma.

the fish must be confused at Miami Medows. Last year I was bass fishing there with soft plastic worm and caught a 5lbs catfish.
