Some assembly required. How does the cost compare to buying one complete?

Congats for the lower buy, there are so many possibilities with these rifles. Look on Brownells website for complete uppers, I have always had luck with them. You can save a few hundred bucks building your own.

In most cases you are going to come out a fair amount cheaper. It all depends on what you want.
As it sits I have $275 in the lower. (and can be done cheaper if one does not want the Magpul upgrades and many stripped lowers can be had for $85-$95)
Rock River Stripped Lower $100
Lower Build Kit (CMMG internals, Magpul Grip, Stock, and extended trigger guard) $150
Magpul ASAP Sling Point $25
As of right now the best deal on a complete lower I can find is $280 (+15 shipping) for a complete Rock River lower.
But these do not include the Magpul parts, which would run about $80 if purchased individually.
So to build what I have that way you are looking at $375 give or take.
Building the lower is simple really. This was my first one and I did it slowly a little bit at a time. I would say totaling 2 hours over the course of a couple weeks.
Now knowing how to do it and the best way to get those little parts to cooperate, I would say I could build it in 45 minutes. I am sure people who do it all the time are well under 30 minutes.
I watched the videos here:

ALso have to figure in that the lower if bought off the internet, would have to be shipped to a registered FFL dealer. It is a controlled part and cannot be bought without a backround check. So you would have another 25-35 bucks to use some one's FFL license to get it in.
By the way, where did you purchase an RRA stripped lower for 100 bucks?

SCP Firearms out of Florida
Steve has impeccable customer service and unbeatable prices.

I Don't think he has anymore at that price. He was unloading them awhile back.
But he always is having great deals
best way to keep track of what he has got is through his classified ad on Sigforum

On Saturday Night's He has a "Saturday Night Special" that he lets things go at ridiculous prices.
I am lucky enough that one of my local FFLs does the transfer for $10. I know many places charge much more than that.
So actually the lower cost me $110 with the transfer.

I bought an RRA lower about 3 months ago.It was 150 at a gun show.Since then, they have lowered to about 130.Kinda surprised to see one at 100 bucks. And at 110,you got a hell of a deal.
Ive been reloading some .223 ammo, and I think this weekend is a good time to send it downrange at about 300 yards.

I think people just got flooded with Rock Rivers around the time Obama got elected and they have just been sitting.
My Local shop had a bunch at the same time I got mine and they were wanting $120.
They were all over www.ar15.com for about $120 as well. But now they are harder to find and closer to the 130-140 mark.

I bought two lowers last year during Obamania. They were back ordered but AIM Surplus honored their price once they came in. $97/ea. Crazy thing is, it had sounded like they would never come in, so I picked up a full DPMS Sportical for my birthday, at MSRP.
Magpul makes a nice grip. I have the MIAD with the medium back strap and smooth front strap, it fills out the hand nicer than the stock A2 grip. The MOE or CTR stock (x3) is the next on my list of things to upgrade. :bigthumb
I already have the Magpul single point sling. I'm not a big fan of it because the ring jingles, but nothing some paracord can't fix.

Kind of digging this thinking about a more precision/sniper setup.

I don't know DMR, but Troy, YHM and LaRue are all good.
Have you seen any of LaRue's Stealth uppers? Cost is high, but his service is second to none. He sent me a Christmas card and ornament last year, along with all the extra goodies that come in his packages.

Or YHM makes some complete uppers that compete, price wise with the 20" you are looking at.

My buddy just got the Magpul ASAP sling mount for his AR.I really like it and am hoping some one at the gunshow this weekend will have one for me to purchase.

Ive got a 24" M1S Stainless fluted bull barrel 1-8 twist with full free float YHM foregrip. Now I know this barrel assembly isnt a 800 dollar unit,But I shoot my reloads at sub 1.5" MOA at 100 yards. And Im still dialing in the scope I picked up from a buddy.20" and above would be great for precision shooting.I also plan on picking up a 16" version for a more tactical approach should we ever do some tactical shooting.

Well I had ordered a CMMG upper through my dealer. CMMG has taken a turn for the worst in their quality department. My dealer had received a couple other guns for customers that looked liked they had been chained to a truck and drug down the highway.
They kept telling my dealer for weeks they had started my upper when in fact they had not even begun building it.
I cancelled my order but then spent the money on my wife a bike and am trying to get all the parts for my Fox body project.
I have another so I am in no real rush.
