:angel:After days of seizures and hard breathing our precious Boxer, Bailey was laid to rest at our request by a fantastic, loving and carrying team of Veteranarians who work at the Bright Pet Clinic in Bright, Indiana.
Bailey was just over 10 years old and had undergone a minor procedure for removal of a growth in her mouth on 3/15. She had recovered fine, but began slipping fast on 3/17 and suffered the first of a series of 3-4 major seizures @ 11:00 PM that night. Her loyal attempts to try and walk, to love on us continued even after her last massive seizure this morning @ 12:30AM that we thought was her last breath. Her devotion had her trying to stay with us and attempting to walk again though this seizure more dramatically effected her sense of balance and ability to breath and swallow. We were able to sleep by her side throughout the night and tend her every need until this morning where she attempted again to gain her balance and walk yet again, but looking to us for assistance. Bailey submitted to our care to ease her pain with love still in her eyes for us Vets Justin and Nicki applied the injection at our request which sent her to her final rest @ 9:00 AM, this first day of spring, March 20, 2010. RIP my precious girl.
Bailey was and will always looked upon as our child, raised from a pup when we picked her out of a litter @ 3weeks in December 1999. We are a couple, childless after 15 years of marriage, and her loss for us is as traumatic an event we have yet to experience in our lives. Never have I had to make such a hard decision. We know from the vets that she was in little pain, but her inability to maintain balance, eat, drink, the final major seizure this morning @ 12:20AM while tending her side, this was no longer an option but neccessary to avoid her from suffering.
We ask for your thoughts and prayers as we have just returned home for the first time after her passing. The coming days will be very anxious and stressful for us.
Please upon our request love and hold your pet close this day and do something extra special for them. Thank you.

God Bless each and every one of you. Thank you all so very much for sharing. I don't think I have hurt this bad since I was 17 which was 28 years ago. I know "men aren't supposed to cry, but I have bawled my eyes out today and last night. We thought at one moment she was gone on her own. Her breathing stopped right after a 5-10 sec heart arythmia (it just started beating so fast I couldn't count) while I was holding her. About 15-20 seconds later after I thought she was gone she took a big long breath and her heart thumped under my hand and she started again. She was determined not to let us down and to comtinue to try and please us.
What hurts most right now is that she kept my wife company when I was out of town. Kim no longer has her buddy and walking partner during the week.
Thanks again friends and acquaintances. You all mean a lot to me whether we have ever met or not, or even if we have not agreed at times. Thnk you all soooooo much for welcoming me into this forum so openly.
God Bless each of you and your families.
Attached are pictures of Bailey. She is a reverse brindle boxer and weighed almost 70 lbs when she was at her peak weight. She loved playing ball, stick, and loved to curl up in the back of any car (but especially the front seat of my mustang) and go for rides. The faster you went, the deeper she would sleep.

Sorry for your loss. I have 3 boxers and I couldnt imagine losing them. Again sorry.
Please give them all big hugs and kisses for my wife and I. Bailey loved to give kisses as well as get them. And please scratch each one right between the eyes in that soft little ridge area they love to have rubbed and cleaned of loose hair. If there is any chance in the future that you breed or sell Boxers please let us know. There is no way we are ready at this time, but one day we may be again, if we think we can handle going through this again one day knowing we would likely outlive another. Thanks.

Im sorry about your loss. I had a boxer for about 9 years, we had to do the same thing, You can tell when a boxer is unhappy, they are very Hyper dogs. You did the right thing though, its not fair to keep them around when they are clearly not happy and cant do boxer things

Kevin, It's 6 am and the first morning here not having her come to get us up to take her out and feed her. I have questioned my decision over and over and over again through the night when I wake up. Thank you for the reassurance that we did the right thing. This morning has been the toughest being it is the first one back here at the house after having her put down. The vets came to my parents house and we sent her off the "sleepy town" (my wife wrote a poem about her going to sleep) in th ecomfort of theie living room. The vets were like two angels, They cried amost as much as we did.
We will get through this just as you and so many others have. Thank you for listening and thank eveyone again for thoughts and prayers.
Please again hug and love your pet today.

Thanks so much Mrs Ape. We have beat ourselves to death over the last 12-18 hours second guessing our decision. Should we have waited another day? Was she improving? Should we wait until Monday? Was she in pain? Was she ready in her mind to go on?
Your support in our decision really helps some of the hurt. Thank you so much. Have a great week, and hug your hound or feline if you have them for us today.

Sorry for your great loss! I know what you mean as being a family member. We have 4 great danes and they are our children along with our 1 month old daughter. We had to have our Doberman put to sleep 2 years ago do to bone cancer and it still is hard to think about.
One thing I would like to pass on to all dog owners and we found out the hard way is Heart Guard heart worm medication causes massive seizures in some dogs! They don't advertise it as a side affect and it is not on their boxes as one. We found our oldest Dane laying in the yard convulsing and we took him to the vet and the diagnosed him as epileptic. So the next month rolled around and I gave them all their heart guard chews and boom 2 hours later big boy was head first into the back of the house convulsing again. Haven't given him Heart Guard for a year now and no more seizures!!!!!!
Didn't want to hijack a thread! Again sorry about the loss as my family knows what you are going through. Remember Bailey is waiting for you over the rainbow bridge!

Sorry to hear, I have a Chinese Shar-Pei, and we found last month she had a skin tumor that can spread to internal organs, luckily we caught it fast before it spread and had it removed, she is 6, the specialist wanted 4000.00 to do the surgery and we were bummed by not being able to do that kind oif money right now, I took her back to my vet of 20 yrs and she offed to do the surgery without doing a skin graft, will not look as good but was done for 10% of the 4 grand abd she is doing great, she will have a scar but it was worth it, I was not able to do nothing and letting it go would have killed me, I love my dog !!
I feel your pain as I thought I was going to be on limited time with her...
I hope you will remember all the good times!!!

No reason to feel you are highjacking. I would love to know that through this thread others are loving their pets more this day and days to come. I would also love to know that dsicsussions like this could bring to light something that may save someone's pet.
Bailey was on heartworm medication and we did figure out about three-four months ago that it was the heart guard meds that would make her be sick and not wish to eat for about 2 dyas each month. The sets did not say to take her off it or that it could cause seizures. Sometimes she would be fine and others, she would lay around and not eat at all for a whole day. So what do you do to protect your dog or cat from heart worm these days? Mosquitos are thicker than fleas anymore and are the primary carrier of this disease we are trying to protect our pets from. Did you get any solutions for your Great Dane? Did the others have similar responses? Please, please respond so others know what alternatives they have if they have to go through this.
We purchased Science Diet Sensitive Stomach Blend for her over the years that seemed to help and later when she matured placed her on CD mature dog blend. We always thought the problem she had every so often was food related and not anything else.
Thank you for your repsonse. I love Great Danes. I dould never imagine having four of them! Enjoy them to their fullest.

I am so glad that you were ableto save your pet, though the scar is there. You did the right thing. We are to be stewards over our pets. They look to please us and love us, and in return we are to please and love and oversee their needs as well. I am no PETA freak by any stretch. But I do believe that GOd put us here not only to rule over the animals but to tend to them as well as the rest of nature while still rationally using the what is here to advance our way of life as well as have some fun (like cars and drag racing).
Sure wish you lived closer. Bright Veterinary Clinic has got to be the best in our area. They have 5 vets who care so much about pets. The two that came to put Bailey to rest cried like Babys with us when she went. They have spent so much time with us on Bailey's annual visits. Kim brings a laundry list (we call it) each year with questions and they go through each of them. They are also VERY reasonable. Well worth a 40+ mile drive each way. Our annual visits dropped over $100.00 per year as compared to our local vet who treated us like numbers.
Take care. We would love to have you come down for come of the cruise-ins and the stangbangferz spring fling. Hope you can make it, and thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much for sharing. You as well as everyone who has responded are so appreicated through this time. I know Bailey is not human and that losing a pet is NOTHING compared to losing a child or your spouse, but it still hurts deeply. God Bless you guys.

Very sorry to hear of your loss. I had to put my first Boxer, Taz, down nearly a year ago. He was only seven when his kidneys failed. It was one of the most difficult experiences of my life. Boxers are indeed special! Take comfort in knowing you did the right thing! Taz was fawn. I now have Shelby...my brindle Boxer boy!
Prayers to you and your family!

Sorry you had to experience a similar loss in a similar way. We both made the right decision and I am better with that decision each hour. Like you we could not have stood to see her suffer only for our own slelfish purposes.
Shelby is an AWESOME NAME for him!! Thank so much for making me laugh with some joy this morning. PLease, please bring him to a cruise in and let me know when and where. We would love to see him.
And last but not least, scratch him between the eyes where Boxers love to be scratched for us and ginve him a HUGE BEAR HUG TONIGH BEFORE YOU GO TO BED!!!! Thanks man!

I know exactly what your going through.
I got my wife a Boxer,Larry, from a family friend a couple years ago.It was the first thing I got my wife after we moved into the new house. He was 6 at the time I picked him up.The family was moving to an apartment and didnt was to take him.
Larry took to her like there was no one else. And of course I was his second choice when she wasnt there.
He was the best damn dog I have ever had.We took him every where with us.He was our kid.
Late last year my wife noticed a lump under is Jaw.Soon it became another lump.We took him in and found out it was cancer, and spreading fast.Nothing we could do because it was spreading like they have seen before.Vet gave him a couple more months. After that moment we stayed with him as much as possible. And he acted like nothing was wrong.Although we could tell, and he did a good job of hiding it.Soon came the time when they became to large and would soon affect his breathing. We had to make the decision.
I will tell you this,it IS the hardest decision I have ever had to make my entire life.We took him to the Vet and had him layed to rest.I am a not much of a crying man.But there is no way in hell I could hold back tears when it finally happened. Its not some thing I want to go through again for ALOT more years to come.
Its hard waking up the next day and not having your buddy there waiting for you to get up.Or hearing him throughout the house making noises,or sitting at the end of bed waiting for "come on" to climb up in bed and lay at our feet.
We did get another boxer after about a month. We couldnt do the empty house thing any more.He is most certainly not a replacement for Larry, but to help us through the hard times of not having our Larry any longer.
Just a couple pics of our boxer Larry.

Face - You said it all, man! Take my "ManCard" again. You got me with that one.Thank you for sharing soooo much. It helps to have the support of everyone. I never realized there are so many Boxer owners on this website.
So many traits you describe are so much like our Bailey was. There seem to be some common traits with them but of course each still his/her own distinct personality.
Truly the hardest thing I had to go throug has well, and as if I have not said that a thousand times today. PLEASE bring your new Boxer to the SPring fling or let us know when you are taking it to a cruise in and we will be there to see him/her.
Larry has such a handsome and distinguished appearance and posture. And thereis nothing like having a dog jump up in bed with you.
Just curious did Larry or your current Boxer shake their heads to make their ears flap loud enough toget you up in the mornings becuase htey were ready to start heir day? Bailey did this her whole life. She was like the alram clock.
Have a good week and Hug and Kiss that boxer right between the eyes for us tonight.
Thanks!

PIT! That is an AWESOME IDEA! I will talk to my wife and see if she can help get something like this going. We will contact seom Vets and the SPCA and see where and how we could raise seom money and/or awareness for a car show that gets peopel to bringtheir dogs out for a good time and raise some cash. I will start looking into some things. If you or anyone else has any ideas we can get together via PM and then start a new thread inthe cruie in or car show section. Will be in touch. Sounds great. We will begin looking for a shelter that is in need and go from there. If you have one in mind since you thought of it feel free to PM me and we can begin building around that. This could really become an annual stangbangerz animal lovers fund raiser function for animal shelters.

I don't have one in mind I'm sure there are tons in need with the way the economy is I'd be happy to help save just one dog .. there are also some rescues that probablly need help too I wanna say there's a boxer rescue here in Cincy somewhere....... (http://boxer.rescueme.org/Ohio) might help heal your wound a little but any of them would be good with me I only thought of it because of you.......

Since I sleep on the side of bed closest to the door, there is a gap between the bed and the chest of drawers.Larry would come over there and either lick me or slobber on me to get me up in the morning. But yea,his ears did flop when he shook his head.Usually in the morning. And strech out and yawn. Some times he would just sit 3 inches from my face and stare at me.You ever get that feeling some one is looking at you?

Thanks Stacey and Chris. Hug that hound of your for us tonight. Appreciate the comments and thoughts. See you guys thuis summer. hope you find a job soon as well!

This is Codi. The newest edition to our family.
This is a puppy pic.

And this is one of him a little older.
That is a small chair for my Daughter.Which he has claimed as his own.

Yip, Bailey would do that to us. If we did not repsond she gave out that real deep and long heavy huff of a sigh, when that didn't get attention the flapping ears would begin along wiht the prancing of the front feet clicking the nails on the hardwood floor. Have a good evening.

PM sent.

I AM SOOOOOOOOO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS. I am face's wife. We lost Larry June 25, 2009 and I still think of him everyday, countless times. Putting him down was the hardest thing I have ever done before and my heart goes out to you immensely. Honestly, my heart didn't start to heal until we got Codie. The empty house was too much for me to handle; especially since I was laid off in March and had been spending every waking minute with him and to have him just gone was too hard. There are many times when I still tear up just thinking about him. We had him cremated so when I have my bad times I can still hold him.
I wish you the best in getting through this hard time. You did the right thing though just remember that.

My wife was here reading with me when I came acrossed your post. We both thank you so much for your re-assurance. We are having the "empty house" syndrome as well, but like you want to make sure that we are ready for another and not just another to take Bailey's place. Thank you so much for sharing and thank face as well again for me. Give Codie a big hug for us tonight!
We were reading tonight from a book written by the Dog Whisperer guy from Animal Planet about how dogs are more prepared to deal with death than we humans are. They see it as a part of their life cycle where as we fear and even resent it coming to us someday. It was good reading and helped the healing process. I am considering Pitbull's idea of putting together a fund raiser for a shelter or rescue home in need. It would be something alongthe lines of a cruise-in/car show/Pet shin-dig where people would bring their pets and their cars and show them off share storiesd eat sone food and raise some money for a shelter in need that could save a dogs life even. I am off this week and will be looking into details through Thursday and if I cna figure out how to organize it so that it would be a success and not a failed attempt I will post up a thread to see if there is any interest.
Thanks and have a good night. :bigthumb
