Drill 3 holes in the top, for the top hinges and also use the vert spring hinges

Not that I know of. Top piece with the 3 bolts is the ACTUAL hinge, and must be in place. The part that bolts inside the trunk, then to the lid in place of the normal hinge is the spring that makes it come open. without that top hinge, the front of the trunk lid will stay sprung up and go all crazy when you open it...
