View Full Version : Hatch Lift Supports

I just installed a fiberglass hatch on my mustang and the lift shocks are too strong for the lighter weight. I am really trying to use the shocks for support and use a collar lock when I want to keep the hatch up. Does anyone know of a solution. I thought about drilling the shocks to release the pressure so they would just act as supports that I could put a collar lock on, but I'm kinda afraid of what would happen if I drilled them since they are under pressure. I can't be the first person to come across this problem :)

Try using just one shock.

I have a worn out set that would probably work lol, seriously. Seems like they have enough as to help lift, but not do their whole job.

I was thinking about drilling a small hole in the strut body. I wonder if it is under a lot of pressure when the strut is extended all the way up....

Ever tried grabbing one of those and compressing it yourself without pushing on the ground or against something... they are pretty tough...

The worn out shock idea is probably your best bet. Go to a junkyard and find one that won't stay up...there's your shocks.

Thats what I did on mine when I removed my spoiler . I replaced only 1 shock and left the other one worn out , works great .

you can just grind a small notch on the shaft and when you compress it against the ground or something.
itll leak the pressure out and not spray you like drilling.

Blazing. I was working on it yesterday and decided to try what bbfstanger suggested and it worked. I wont need the ones you have, thanks for the offer though I really appreciate it!
