i have (2) ssp gauge clusters.one is dated 91 and the other is dated 93...my question is why does the 93 have the odometer that will go above 100,000 miles and keep counting and the 91 only goes to 99,999 then starts over.they both have actual miles the 91 has only 54,000 miles and the 93 only has 60,000 actual miles.does anyone have any idea why they changed them?

No clue. But can I ask you something? Do either of them say Ford Motorsports on them? Reason I ask is a 88 coupe Im looking at says that on the speedo.

no i actually had one of them years ago,both of mine say calibration certified and register 160 mph

that was a motorsport part if i remember right...i thought at one time you could purchase them through the dealer ask mwoods about that he knows that information more than likely...

Hmm Ive tried searching around to see if there is anything special about em and cant find anything. I didnt even pay attention what it went up to. Im going back Saturday though so Ill figure out if its a SSP or not.

I think '88 was first year for 140 speedo?

Spring of 89 the ridiculous Carter speedo law was no longer in effect. In spring of 89 the speedo's turned to 140's again. That's why 89 140 speedos bring a premium because they retro back to 87 and 88 and early 89. the 90's won't work because they changed the clusters when the airbags became standard.
As for the extra digit odometer, that's a good question, I have seen those on very late 93's I would consider it a very rare occurance.

Weird, this car is a 88 and the miles match up to the title so maybe it was installed when it was brand new. He was saying something about the title not being put into anyones name until like 97 or 98 when they ran a carfax on it to make sure it had 91k on it and not 191k. Im stumped. Ill make sure to take some pics of it if I dont by some small chance buy the car.

cant find where I first saw this long ago but from other stuff I came across it wasnt just NY DSO cars that had "million mile odometers" but they were manditory in NY

I got lucky with a cluster I put in my 81 coupe when I changed the dash. I have heard that the clear plastic comes apart and you can make the odometer read anything you want. Mine was close enough to what the title said so I didn't try with mine.

Yup. I remember reading that ages ago from a car mag somewhere.

It became standard in most cars.

LOL...I tried that once when I was a kid! I wanted the odometer to read 00000 when I put the new engine in. After about an hour, and only getting about 35 or so miles, I said "EFF THIS!", and took it apart and rolled them all to 0's! :lol:
