I'm gonna need a helmet this year if i'm gonna do any racing. I don't know anything about size or requirements. I know i could just order from Summit or something but how do i determine size? Can i just go by hat size? I'm hoping to be running in the 11s so i don't think i need a full face? Is there any place local i could go and try them on? What about the cheap ones at Walmart/PepBoys?

It is but they've never enforced it on me until '08 the last time i was there. I've been there running 12s all day in another guy's car, and the first time i ran 13 in my car they busted me. I figure now there's no way i'm gonna get away with not having one.

Go to pretty much any motorcycle shop to try them on. every brand of helmet runs different as far as size goes. I wouldnt buy anything that you didnt get to strap on your mellon first. If you have never had a helmet you will be just fine getting something cheap. However once you stick your head in a real helmet like an Arai or a Suomy the rest will feel like wearing a brick on your head. I would by a cheap one too if its just to use for a few passes but back when I used to put 10k+ miles on a street bike each season it was well worth the outragious price of a high end helmet. Like just about everything in life, you get what you pay for.

Yeah i was thinking about a bike shop. Is there any difference in requirements as far as a DOT bike helmet and what i would have to have for racing?

Not a bad guess, I havent really looked in a few years since I have been out of street bikes. the last helmet I bought was in 2004 and a decent Arai or Suomy were well over 500 bucks then. Im sure they didnt get any cheaper!

scorpion offers good helmets for relatively cheap. look up sportbiketrackgear.com
check out the scorpion exo 400, they have a few of last years paint schemes for cheap(*<100). By far the best helmet for the dollar. I have an exo 400, 700 and agv rossi. AGV rossi ran me over 500 but the scorpions' fit and finish is just as well. Both SNELL and DOT approved. I'm not the only one advocating scorpion either, Matt Mladin wears an EXO-700. I've worn mine on extended (5+ HR) rides in cold, heat, rain etc and no complaints.

I got a cheap one from PEP Boys. It ain't much but I only do T/T once in a while. It says DOT but I don't know if it is SNELL as well. Tech (E20) has yet to question me on it when I show it to them. Summit has some really nice ones. Cincy can likely hook you up as well.

Cycle Specialties is where I got my old HJC helmet, it is out dated for SCCA with a M85 rating....doubt Edgewater cares.
You can find some high dollar ones on c/l. They get them to take the motorcycle test with then sell them. I am looking at a few on there now that are anywhere from 200 to 500 dollar helmets going for 60 to 120.

A used helmet grosses me out. I dont really like trying the ones on in stores to find my size, yet alone one that somebody has rode around with there sweaty, greasy, nasty head in. If your cool with it than by all means save yourself a few bucks. I on the other hand will come up with the cheese for a freash one and I NEVER let anyone use my helmet.
I am picky on the helmet. You can tell if its been on long. Sanitize the hell out of it and I am good. I have a few friends that have only wore it for the test. Or bought the wrong size and just want to sell it. I had one that i never wore for 2 years. I finally put it on when I got a bike that matched it. lol

I take the liners out and wash them. You can get a good helmet cheap if you look online. I have a matte black Icon with a chrome shield and a Suomy Bostrom replica.
I have a few helmets but one doesn't match the bike but is a nice fit. one I used for ATV and the other looks cool as hell and matches my bike perfect but its a cheepo and has a little gap when you have the visor down. I have tried to fix it but its just a cheep helmet/ I think I want a carbon fiber one anyway since I will have it on all the way to Florida. I dont know. I am still looking.

The Eastgate Meijer didn't have any when i looked there. Pep Boys only has one open face and it looked more like a mountain bike helmet. Walmart has a decent plain black full face for like $80 that i might buy. I just wanna make sure i'm not gonna get hassled over the rating if it has to be something special.

I got my simpson open face helmet at the US Nationals for $75 back in 98 and it was a Snell 95. Last years rule book says NHRA requires Snell 2000 or better right now and soon the 2000's will be outdated. (I believe after 2014)
For T&T I have never had my helmet checked, they just make sure you have one. I've seen guys with autocross helmets on there.

You dont need to spend a bunch of money on a helmet. I wouldnt trust my saftey to a pep boys or wall mart helmet. Check with Cincy Speed they used to have them in stock . I bought my last helmet at IronPony. http://www.ironpony.com/
I always find it amusing the discussions about "how do I get the cheapest helmet possible".
I mean, I understand that realistically a 12 or 13 second car isn't really going that fast, but accidents do happen. Consider that a 12 second car is still going to be going through the traps at 110+ mph. If something happens at the big end of the track, it's going to end bad. Not to mention what happens if you're launching on DRs or slicks and something breaks in the drivetrain and snaps the car sideways and puts you into the wall. That's going to hurt, even at 20-30 mph.
Something else to consider is the intended use of a helmet. A helmet designed for motorcycle use (Snell "M"), while legal for drag racing or autocross is really not the best choice. The proper helmet for automobile racing is a Snell "SA" rated helmet, which is designed for the type of impact that is most likely in a car crash, as well as being fireproof.
Just a thought:
http://www.dariusrudis.com/junk/2010_01_Modified_Mustang_helmet_fire.jpg
A quick look over at Racer Wholesale (http://www.racerwholesale.com/index.php?cPath=35_145) found that they have SA2005 helmets for around $200, and since the SA2010 rating is due out this summer, there will probably be some good deals available on SA2005 (which are still legal for another 5 years) as we get closer to race season. I know Craig can get G-Force helmets, which from personal experience I prefer to Bell or Simpson.
Use the right equipment for the sport you're doing. You wouldn't wear a baseball helmet to play football.

IIRC, SA2010 helmets won't be out until Oct 2010, SCCA had to change their helmets rules because of this.
