Thanks to a loose-lipped Facebookian that couldn't help sharing insider information and a quick follow-up post from Inside Line, we can now confirm the return of the iconic 5.0-liter Mustang GT for 2011. Even better news is the fact that the Mustang GT's new mill will crank out an impressive 412 horsepower.

By way of comparison, the 2010 Chevy Camaro SS has a 6.2-liter V8 with as much as 422 horses when mated to a six-speed manual and the 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 has a 6.1-liter Hemi that offers 425 ponies. And remember, both of those rivals are considerably heavier than the Mustang.

As much as we'd like to unload more goods on the 2011 Mustang, you'll just have to wait until Ford's good and ready. Or someone blows another embargo, whichever comes first.

The motor is a 5.0 4v with twin independent variable cam timing and not the junky VCT that the 3v's have. It is the same system they have on the 3.0 DOHC V6. There will also be 6 speed manuals in both the v6 and the GT models in addition to the GT500. I see these cars coming in at the 3500-3600lb range and hitting the 1/4 mile with a 12.6 to 12.8 @110mph in stock form as a quick guess. Low 12's or high 11's with some sticky tires.

I think he will go through at least two more cars before a 2011 ever hits their lot.

2011 isn't getting a major sheet metal change at all that I am aware of.

That was the concept done by Italian designer Fabrizio Giugiaro

I sure hope not...I'm still trying to warm up to the rear ends of the '10s, which is a slow, slow process. 5.0 FTW though!!!! :bigthumb

Looks like I will not be buying a new mustang even if I had the money and wanted to. Not impressed Ford. Keep it American. What's next, front wheel drive? Just kill the Mustang now and call this thing the Ford Probe II. Good grief.

You are correct . . . next "big" change is for MY 2014. And there hasn't been any hint to what styling direction FMC will take. The Giugiaro Mustang was just a styling exercise. He also designed the Bertone Mustang in 1965 and the Corvette Moray.

This is all good news indeed. However, I wonder if they can contain the cost or if the prices are going to take a big jump too?

My guess is 1500-2000. That depends on if they have forged rods and pistons (doubt it) to go with the forged crank.

Well hopefully Gweedo or however you say his name will stick to designing Fiat's and Ferrari's or whoever or whatever he/she designs for. Let the orginal pony car remain the origianl pony car with american styling that represents Ford and not some Euro-looking, triangle tailIght, halo-light, accented design. Next thing will be gull wing doors. (Arghhhh!!!!) Leave copying the euro look to the reverse engineers in Nipon (Japan to you and me).
