Have any of you seen or built a 327 sbf? Wouldnt a 331 crank and rods, mated with stock pistons and bore, give you 327 cubes? Lmk what your thoughts on this engine combo are, good and bad. Thanks

Mongoose on here has a 327 that was built by Mike Bell/Dayton Performance, And it is one BAD Small Block ...
Maybe Mike or Frank will chime in and tell you the specifics ( Unless it's a Trade Secret LOL)

that's one thing I've never really understood. the whole 306 vs 327, 347 etc....... why do one vs the others.......

Because there is no replacement for displacement !!! :bigthumb

the reason people do one over the other is the amount of money they want to spend i mean i just built mine as a 306 so i didnt have to get a different crank or rods and i think you are right on how to get a 327 and if i was building a stroker i wouldnt go no bigger then a 342 because i was told it dont need the extra machine work of the block that cost more money

so what's the difference in cost to do the machine work???? I'm just curious I'm prolly going to do a build this spring...... and sorry if I'm jacking your thread..... just seems to me like if you've got it tore apart might as well do the bottom end as well....

A 327 is just a stock 4.00" bore 331...still uses the 331 crank and rods....and a 4.00" bore piston. Stock pistons will not work with this. A 331/347 use a 4.03" bore. If you have to have your stock block cylinder walls cleaned up...you may as well just have it bored .030" over..and build a 331/347. Very little cost difference. You can almost build a cast crank 331/347 for what it cost to build a 306 with good rods/pistons.

The difference here is a 342 is a 4.00in bore and really if you are using a used block you will want the cylinders machined anyway. Not that big a deal.
Lol and what Jeff said.

Thanks for the input! No real reason for a 327 build other than to agrivate chebby lovers. I just always wondered why ya dont see em. Why cant you use stock pistons? I was told cuz of the wrist pins, but why? Especially sincce you can use stockers with a 347 crank and rods to get a 342. It would probably make more since to do the machine work and jus build a 331. But i have questions, and i need answers:D

The compression height of a 331 and 347 is much shorter than a stock 302 piston which puts the wrist pin higher than the stocker. You can't use a stock piston with a 347 crank and rods:lol:....well i guess you could if you wanted the piston tops to be way out above the deck of the block at TDC..like .25+ out. Take a look at some piston dimentions...compare a 302 vs. a 331 or 347 piston...will explain alot to you.

:flipoff: I see, I see. So one would have to order stock bore pistons with a 331 or 347 piston wrist pin height to achieve a 327 or 342?

and.......... do all the cubic inches you can, if you're going to build ... i have a 331, wish i had those few extra cubes of a 347 ........... probably amounts to 20+ horsepower with the better compression ...

If you are starting from scratch, you may want to consider 351 swap. Many people are afraid to do the swap, but it's not bad. The advantage is a stronger block, and you dont have to buy a stroker crank/rods. There are a lot of choices to make, depending on your intent, but if you want cubes, that's the best alternative.

If your gonna switch to a windsor...then just build a stroked windsor. Part of me wishes I would have built a 408+ inch stroked windsor rather than the 347 I built in '02. No replacement for cui on a n/a motor.

I might be correcting that mistake this winter....or at least go to a 363 with my R302 block.

The 327 we built for Mongoose was an FRPP sportsman block, which came -.001 under, so it needed honed out to the bore size we wanted, which was standard bore plus a couple extra for clearance. We had it torque plate honed, then ordered pistons a little larger to fit. Worked pretty well. I would never use a standard bore block new or used unless it could be torque plate honed round first. Usually there is way too much clearance.

The goal is to put together a turbo motor this winter. The rest of the car is fairly built, no cage or 9 inch tho. All of the suspension and bushings have been replaced with tubular and urethane components. And I am running a TKO trans. I really just want about 475-500 reliable ponys under the hood, with good street manners and be able to drive it across the country without any issues. And do it on the slimmest budget possible!!

Fast
Reliable
Cheap
You can have 2 of the 3.....but not all 3!

But those 3 variables differ depending on what you consider fast, reliable, and cheap!!

I built a turbo windsor on the cheap, it went 11s and drove it daily. Its all in how much work you are willing to and how long you will search for the right parts
