View Full Version : How to get the best times out of an 07?

So my dad took his 07 to test and tune last night and the best he could muster up was a 15.2. Long story short, I bet him a steak dinner that I could run a better time. He was blowing the tires off and not letting out. I told him I thought I could run atleast a 14.79. So that's where I have to get to. The car is pretty much stock. It's a 5-speed, 3:55 gears, 18" wheels with the stock BF Kdws, Roush shifter, and tuned by Ken at Mod Depot. I know my 60' time will make or break it. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I have to show the old man up.

Launch as you said is key. My car launched best for me on stock rubber by reving the car to about 2500 and riding the clutch out nearly all the way through first gear before grabbing 2nd. Shift at about 6000rpm as well. I was only about to run about a 13.8 with a tune and shifter, but I'm not the best driver in the world either. Eventually with bolt on's I was able to run a 12.85 on drag radials.
Hope this helps.

Really? Take hellen keller out of the driver's seat, and go bust off a mid 13 like that car should be doing tuned LOL.

Launching these boats stock are tough. My best bonestock was a 13.55. 4.10s DRs CAI and tune it ran 12.7s. Suspension work and UDPs it ran 12.5s. I went FI after that but knew 11s were possible. Anything over 2k with no clutch slippage the car will just spin for the first 2 gears. Try launching at 2k and practice slipping the clutch. Good luck.

Still doesn't explain a 15.2 LOL. You could do a 2.5 60 foot and still probably run deep 14s or touch high 13s.

I hope that 15.2 was a v6 time.

i ran a 15.2 in my Elantra before it got totaled....i would have handed my keys to someone who knows how to drive before i would claim a 15.2 in an 07 GT...

Ahh he was just having fun, this was his first time. He was trying to launch wayy too hard and staying in it. You have to start somewhere.

I have heard mixed reviews about burn outs on street tires, although most people say don't. It's almost impossible to drive around the water box and not get the tires a little bit wet.

i tried to tell him to lower the pressure in the rears and up the pressure in the front, he didnt wanna mess with it, lol

Try and get a good night to go down, track conditions make a huge difference as you probably know. The colder the air the better the motor will like it, but the colder the track the less traction you'll get.

It is possible to hook a 1.9-1.8 on the stock tires, but not reliably every time. I have achieved 1.9's and two 1.8's (best 1.85). I go around the water box and only do a "dust off" burn out dry (in first) and launch @ 2200 RPM. Tire pressure on rears @ 28psi (NLT 26psi), 40psi (NHT 45psi) on fronts.
Just be careful going into second. Like others have said you can light them up easilly in the S197 if you hit second too hard.

I'm pretty sure 1.6 seconds slower than stock in a NOT STOCK (has a tune) GT....is very, very sad. If it was just a shitty run, cool np...but if that's the best he could run...this means his averages were what...mid 15s? LOL

Looked again, best run was 15.02, average was low 15s. Shitty times, we get it. He was not out to set any records, have bragging rights, etc. He was out to have fun and try something out, mission accomplished. You can LOL all you want, noone gives a shit. You're not adding any sort of positive aspect to this thread or this site from what I have seen. You can talk about how shitty it was all you want and that's the truth, but in the end he still had a blast.

When I say cooler nights, I mean 40-50 degree nights and not 70 degree days that we've been having lately. 4.6s are notrious for running hot and that difference of 30 degrees or so makes a huge difference in them. For example Monday/Tuesday it's suppose to be mid 60's-low 70's, compared to Thursday night should be in the low 40's high 30's. Get the picture?

Lol I was just being a dick. I get the picture I'm still trying to think of why he is running low 15s tho. What is he trapping and is this is a 3V car or a v6? Idk what else to tell him other than powershift that bitch and leave the line around 2000rpms.
Mine never runs hot. I would change the t-stat if you think its running hot then.

My 4.6 personally doesnt run hot but I dont beat on it. Some of my friends with 4.6 2V's always ran what I thought was kinda hot, maybe it was because they beat the fuck out of theirs compared to me though.

I have a 160 t-stat in mine and it runs nice and cool. Even w the stock when I beat the hell out if the car I never had issues idk maybe I'm lucky.

Maybe just my few friends with them were unlucky lol because mine has the stock t-stat and is always fine.

The 2v did have a slight coolant flow or routing issue with regard to cooling IAW some technical forums I was using when I had my 02. There was a mod that could be performed to help get more cooling to cylinder 8 (driver side closest to the fire wall) which was always the big concern on higher modded engines. It was the most likely to generate issues. I don't remember the details but you could likely get info about he mod from Ken @ MD or Craig @ Cincy. I never did it because I never found there to be any issues since I was running N/A and only a couple of bolt ons.

You're going to have to have a feel for the car. When you drag race you will start to feel the breaking point of where the tires want to let go. You're going to have to regulate the gas peddle in the begining and mash it towards the end. If you keep traction you should easily beat that time.

Is this kinda of comment realy nessasary ? His dad had fun and went slow, big deal. He was just asking for a little advise, not someone to be a smart ass. We all can't be John Force.
As for a little help , do like others have sugested, go around the water do a little dry hop to clean off the tires. When you come out, a little slipping of the clutch can go a long way. If it starts to spin feather it a little bit.

With 3.55 gears you should be in 3rd at the traps. 3.73s you will be hitting the stock rev limiter just at the traps,4.10s will add a 3-4 shift.

i agree on going thru traps in 3rd.. only way that car will turn a 15sec timeslip is the driver.. tell him not to read a book in between shifts..
