So i'm driving down to ohio University yesterday and i just got on to us50 after getting off of 35. i was stuck behind a truck hauling pumpkins so i was going to pass it so i downshifted. when i did i heard some kind of noise and now the only gears that i can shift into are 1, 3, 5. i have no 2, 4, or R. can anybody tell me what they think is going on?

Sounds like you have lost the synchros or bent the fork.

they always say those trannies arent made to be down shifted...

not positive on how these trans work, but if they use shifter linkage cables, id say you stretched or broke the one that pushes, and the one that pulls is still fine. if thats the case it won't be an expensive problem at all, however im just speaking from experience on imports and FWD cars, so that only goes so far. if it feels like there is just nothing there when you pull back on the shifter, and it just bounces back out, id imagine this is the case.

No cable's nsaniti.
And I also heard that you dont bend shift forks, you break them. But that is just some thing I have heard.Never had the need to check it.Anyway,it sounds like you have a messed up fork or synchro.

T-45? If so you just broke a shifter fork. Been there twice. The fork itself is cheap, but better get a hanes book and take your time tearin into the tranny.

Get a hold of Chad393na, he's good with 5 speed transmissions.

I would take it apart and see if the shifter itself or something simple is broken first. Do you have an aftermarket shifter with stops? I would think if it were a shift fork that was broken, it would not shift into (1 and 2) or (3 and 4) or (5 and R), since each shift fork would only shift between the two gears.

I'm thinking something happened to keep the shifter from going back to engage the other gears.

my ripper did that. The stoppers moved out to where I couldnt get those gears and if it did it would pop out. Little adjustment and it was good to go. That was in a fox though. I have heard if you really pull on the t45 trannys the forks can easily break. Dont know for shure though, just what I have heard

ok well i have no clue what is going on. people have told me so many different things. it does have a short throw shifter if that makes a difference.

Try backing off the stop bolts and see if will go into gear then. If not then take the shifter out and see if there is anything wrong with it (ie the bottom lever will move forward and back all the way). If nothing appears to be wrong with it, the problem is probably in the tranny somewhere. My money is on the shifter (most likely the stop) because of the gears it won't go into.

Junk the 3650 tranny. Thats what's in your '04. 1 &2 are on a common synchro, and 3 &4 are on a common synchro.

would much rather have the 3650 than the t45.. so id stick with that unless you have 1500-2k to dish out for a tko.

well it ended up being the bolts that stop the shifter. so im really thankful
