I know some of you out there have some experience in this area, I'm looking for a small welder for use here in my garage. It is something that will only be used once in a blue moon... I have done welding off and on over the last 25 years, I took a year of welding in HS, And I did landscaping for a living for 14 years and equipment was always breaking the only problem was I had to use whatever welder was available (Stick and Wire feed) I am by no means saying I am a welder, But an do well enough for what I need one for... ANYWAY LOL
I'm wanting preferably a 110v wirefeed with the gas... I could go to 220 but really don't want to...
As most everyone knows, I'm a CheapSkate !!! I have looked around and have found quite a few for what I'm wanting to spend, I just don't know what I should look for ( Spec Wise ) Anyone that has a home welder or knows welding Please make a suggestion!!!
 Again I want to stress the CheapSkate thing !!!
Thanks

Well Im no great welder either by any means but I have used my dads Craftsmen Mig 110 and for small jobs and thin metal it does the job, the wire speed is kinda funky on it though never thought it was quite that accurate IMO. On the other hand he has a 220 Lincoln stick welder that really gets it done, that might be overkill for what you want though.

I like miller and hobart welders. I picked up a Hobart 187 and I like it alot. For a 110 welder check out the hobart 140. I think they are great for the money.

If you can swing it get the 187. Its a 220 mig, but its way more consistent (less voltage drop). You'll have a wider range of metal thicknesses you can use it on as well. I use the 180,which is the precursor to the 187 (it just has 7 heat settings instead of 4 on the old one) They have them at TSC and only cost about 700 bucks. Mine came with a cart, gloves, and a helmet. Miller has some nice new inverter welders that make it easier for the beginner/hobbyist to do nice welds. DeLille out on the west end of Springfield sells them.

I am just now starting to sock money away for a new mig and a plasma. I plan so far unless I see a reason to do differant to buy the miller Dual voltage machines of both. I wanted the new prota pack that miller makes but I can't see the extra 500+ dollars for me

Look for a used Miller Sidekick. They should go around $350-$500. I learned using one of these and have been using the same one for about 12 years, daily. Nice little welder. I got mine from the place I worked because the capacitor was going bad and the wiring to the capacitor was burnt. It cost me about $40 and 2 hours of my time to fix it.
