I sold my 1991 LX 3 years ago and bought my Srt4. Which i have regretted for 3 years, not that the srt was bad just missed not having a mustang. So finally had the money to get another one. I picked up an 1988 Coupe wednesday. Its a very solid car. Just needs some little odds and ends for now. Paint isn't the best but i will have that taken care of this winter :bigthumb Now for the details. Its an 88 converted to mass air. 306 w/ Edelbrock Performer heads, trick flow street heat intake, 75mm throttle body and mass air, 24 lb injectors, 4.10 gears with auburn posi unit. 5 speed w/ King cobra clutch which i hate the pedal feel and going to a spec asap. Just gonna drive it for the rest of the summer and enjoy it and then over the winter start tearing into it and getting the body and interior atleast where i want it. The motor runs very strong so im just gonna leave it be for now.

If it's original to the car it would be titainium, it looks like that in the pic. Sometimes the factory tear tags are still under the bucket seats between the springs and foam. That will tell ya what color foo shoooww:cool1::cool1:

Thanks was just gonna drive it until the winter and then let it become a project.. But with it burning oil like it is i might as well start early on it  I will check the seats.. It has 1990 interior in it i believe cause it has the 25th anniversary dash in it and the grays match... So what color gray did the 1990 have?

89's had the 25th anniversary horse, I think 90's-up had the horse but no "25th Anniversary" script. 89 would be smoke gray... 90 and up would be the titanium like Joe said.

Btw... I LOVE the shifter setup...

i hate that long shifter handle... Didnt they run the horse 25th on some cars that were built in 90.. Just thought i read that somewhere before

update.. Just redoing the 306 now.. When i check the compression all cylinders were perfect with exception of oil on number 7. Should i replace all the rings or just do number 7?

exrider416
08-27-2009, 07:56 PM
also should i replace all 3 rings on 7 or just the oil ring? Let me know what you guys think... Thanks Dave

any advice?

your going through the whole motor? best to replace the rings as well. However you can pull the ring off put it in the block and check the clearances but honestly...its cheap insurance to replace them. Do you reallly wanna have to pull the motor back out for something like this?

buy an explorer motor for 500 at a junk yard, sell the heads 200 bux sell the intake 100 bux you have 200 in a ford built shortblock that with your heads and cam/intake should make you a mid 11's motor?? food for though?? lmk if you need any more info

Got the rings on the pistons, new rod bearings, cam and timing chain and gears and installed it all.. Tonight i put the oil pickup tube on, oil pan and timing cover back on. Have to wait till tuesday when my spark plug inserts come in to repair the 2 chewed spark plug threads in my heads. Then its time to bolt everything back on. Drop the motor and trans in the car and hope it fires :bigthumb

Nope, the 90's actually said '25th' aniversary. The ones from 91 to 93 just had the running horse with no writing. You probably have a 93 from the color. That means only a 93 will work. It was a bastard year color. I had a heck of a time finding stuff for my calypso car.
