View Full Version : My New toy.....and Injury

So a couple of you might know or have noticed me being the dork w/a splint at the cruise in... that is because I slammed my hand in my car door and almost chopped off my fingers (that was 7 wks ago). I got stitches and fortunately it is just now healed okay and I have some feeling in them.
Well on Friday Chris and I bought a new 4 wheeler... we decided to get a Polaris 400 high output to keep at his grandparents' farm. I know we should both wear helmets at all times, but we did not buy them yet and were back in the woods on Saturday and I was on the back... We were going 1-2 mph and sure enough, we drove over a banch on the ground, which snapped and drilled me in the face. Within a second I felt my face gushing blood and I saw it all over the back of his shirt so we rushed back to the house and his grandpa drove me to the ER out in grant county. Turns out the branch cut my entire lower lid and cut my tear duct as well as my nose... yeah it's pretty gross.
Long story short, I needed surgery by an eye lid specialist... once they refused to treat me, we went to UC hospital and they were wonderful. We went to the ER and after a 2 hr wait, I went back and had an incredible doctor. He worked on me for 4 hours straight and got me sewed up and a stint put in from my tear duct to the inside of my nose. Bad news is my tear duct was completely torn and I pretty much want to rip my face off right now it hurts so bad. This has been one of my most painful injuries ever (and trust me- I have had a lot!) and is incredibly uncomfortable and just throbs... I haven't slept at all in days and I go back to the dr tomorrow morning for him to check everything. It looks disgusting and my eye is still completely bloody but I think I might be able to open it by the end of the week once it's not so swollen.... I am just ready for it to heal and stop hurting so freaking much. Next time I get on the stupid thing I will be extra cautious and have all the gear.
Anyway, if you guys can keep me in your thoughts I would really appreciate it. I am really hoping I do not need a 2nd surgery to repair my tear duct and I am very thankful that my vision should be okay once it is healed....however long that will take.

Hope you feel better soon!! I will say a little prayer for you.

I cant stress enough to wear a helmet.Been riding a 4 wheeler for about 3 years. I was back in the woods on one of my trails with two friends of mine. I was going up a small creek bed hill side when the quad stalled out. It rolled back, caught compression in 1st gear and rolled back into the creek bed. I WAS wearing my helmet and chest protector when I hit the rocks, the helmet took a HUGE blow and moved a bit. Just enough for the handlebars to smash into my face just below the helmet chin gaurd. It smashed my lower teeth row through my lip and almost completely ripped it off.Had to have plastic surgury to have it reconstructed.
The helmet I still have to remind me to always wear one.It was completly bashed right wear the back of my skull would have taken the hit. Also have the scar on my lip to remind me.

Sorry to hear of your injury. Hopefully everything heals, and you have a quick recovery.
We have been riding for many years, and take it or leave it, I am going to offer some advice. Please reconsider riding double on an ATV. We have seen the terrible outcome of riding double on ATV's over any terrain more than once. With 2 riders on one ATV, the "predictability" factor declines dramatically.
We hope for you a speedy recovery.:)

Going forward, I will wear a helmet... trust me.
And no luck on the job hunt... my fiance, Chris, actually just went back to work this week, after being laid off a year. So that is good at least. I already finished a summer class so I will probably continue looking, and take time to rest and heal up in the meantime.
Thanks to all of you. I actually just got back from the dr this morning and he says everything is healing just fine. I am just hoping my stint stays in for another 6-8 wks and doesn't want to come out too soon. Evidently the stint just "falls" out of my eye, when ready.... which is a little disturbing. It is a few inches long and the tear duct goes way down into my face, which I never knew. Grossss...

Had it been literally a centimeter higher it would have actually got my eye and had it been a centimeter lower it would have completely missed my tear duct.
Today I pretty much want to rip my face off it is so uncomfortable... but here are 2 pics.
This is after I was all sewed up (1 on Sat and the other 2 days ago).... it looks 100 times better compared to before! And ya....I look like crap. Trust me I do not care right now. I am just glad the doctor did a great job. It's healing up very quick on the outside.

Just thank God you didn't lose an eye! You may not think it but you are very lucky.
I also can not stress enough that a helmet is the most important thing to wear. You life may depend on it.

I would for sure go with the full face helmet. I dropped my old Ninja this time last year doing a stunt like a jack-a$$. Of course my helmet was netted to the tail for Cool reasons. My headache didn't fade for days (concusion smushushin) but I always were it now though.... I got off easy compared to your situation. Glad to hear your recovering.

I'm sorry that you have to endure this injury. Still like everyone said your are very lucky. This reminds me on how fragile we are. I hope you have a quick recovery and that your tear duct didn't sustain any injury that would lead into another surgury. Did the doctor give you a idea on how quickly this should heal?

I think Chris should think long and hard if he wants to marry you, I think you may be cursed. Just kidding. I hope the recovery goes well, that look damn painful.

+ 1 on the helmet- My mom had to stapple my brother head shut after he hit his head on road when he was screwing around on his bike. My family and I wasn't too happy with Mt. Airy Hospital since she had to fix the problem herself there since the workers didn't know what they were doing.

That's what everybody was saying at the cruise-in we went to last night  Funny...but kind of not at the same time.

So this Sat will be 6wks since my incident... I go back to the dr on the 29th, 1 day before I leave for Charleston. My stint is still in which is very good... If it has not fallen out by when I go to the dr. on the 29th, he is going to take it out.... Cringe.... that doesn't even sound good... I did, however, buy a helmet but I guess I was a lil too late. I am hoping it healed properly and I do not need another surgery but I'll know for sure 2 weeks from today. And maybe I can finally wear a contact and fully see again!!!! I am hoping and praying.

So I just got home from the dr....and had my stint removed. I was there over 3 hours and it is finally out!! My eye is sore and feels a lil funny, and my reddness and scarring will eventually go away. He said it healed miraculously wonderful. Several of the surgeons there examined my eye after hearing the story and the severity of the injury. Most people were surprised at how good it looks, considering that my whole tear duct was shredded with my whole lower lid cut up and exposed tissue.
I am very fortunate for it to have healed properly and to have had such a WONDERFUL doctor. I would recommend him to anyone. No contacts for 4 days-2 wks, depending on how it's feeling. Now I can be in a good mood while on vaca and not have to worry about my stupid eye......or finger, finally!
