Supervisor Asks Woman To Take Down American Flag

MANSFIELD (CBS 11 News) ―

Is it okay to show your patriotism at the office?

For one Arlington woman, the answer was "no" after she hung an American flag in her office just before the Memorial Day weekend.

Debbie McLucas is one of four hospital supervisors at Kindred Hospital in Mansfield. Last week, she hung a three-by-five foot American flag in the office she shares with the other supervisors.

When McLucas came to work Friday, her boss told her another supervisor had found her flag offensive. "I was just totally speechless. I was like, 'You're kidding me,'" McLucas said.

McLucas' husband and sons are former military men. Her daughter is currently serving in Iraq as a combat medic.

Stifling a cry, McLucas said, "I just wonder if all those young men and women over there are really doing this for nothing."

McLucas said the supervisor who complained has been in the United States for 14 years and is formerly from Africa. McLucas said the supervisor took down Debbie's flag herself.

"The flag and the pole had been placed on the floor," McLucas said. But McLucas also said hospital higher ups had told her some patients' families and visitors had also complained.

"I was told it wouldn't matter if it was only one person," she said. "It would have to come down."

McLucas said hospital bosses told her as far as patriotism was concerned, the flag flying outside the hospital building would have to suffice.

Kindred Hospital Corporate Headquarters are located in Kentucky. They have yet to make a final decision on the matter. They have not returned our phone calls for comment.

The Kindred Hospital Corporation was chosen as Fortune's most admired for 2009. McLucas hopes they'll back her patriotism.

"I find it very frightening because if I can't display my flag, what other freedoms will I lose before all is said and done," McLucas asked.

Read about that yesterday. The update is the Hospital has relented after being bombarded with phone calls and emails. They "now" say that the reason for taking down the flag was because it was too large(3x5). I would have beaten the AFRICAN into the ground for laying the flag on it. Regardless she is allowed to have a flag now. Hopefully someone slashes the tires or sugars the tank of the AFRICAN.

That is absolutely ridiculous. I'm glad she is "now" able to display the flag. I agree that if you find OUR countries flag offensive then you need to get the F out.

I think her best course of action is to buy a bus, paint it to look like the flag and park it in her parking space every morning! Or how about a nice RW&B nurses smock?

I am really getting to the point that if you are offended by something patriotic about this fine country, I may just personally escort you to the ocean and give you a little shove home.

The fact that something like this is even a discussion is a friggin joke. There was a time, not even that long ago really, that an action like that would've most likely got the person taking the flag down fired or at least given some type of reprimand. Nowadays the person putting up the flag and hospital come under fire. Try asking someone to remove their flag from their office in another country and see how far that gets ya. Americans, by and large, have become a big group of passivised pussies. It's sad.

my email I sent when I read about this.

You people should be imbarrased and ashamed. How do you sleep at night? This is AMERICA. If people dont like seeing the flag that stands for their freedoms, they need to go some where else. You not standing behind the flag is like not standing behind the brave people who fight and have died so you have the life you have.

You can take down my flag when Im cold and dead on the floor with more spent round than can be counted.
Im completely disgusted at how this country is "coming along".You dont like my flag, come on in,lets talk about why my members of my family has fought and died so that you can come here and complain about some thing I have put up.YOU OF ALL PEOPLE SHOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO HELP ME PUT IT UP!

I just hope I don't ever need medical care near that hospital. I would tell the ambulance driver to go to the next one. They should be ashamed...

We put up a flag pole at our shop right after 9/11! We didn't get permission from the city, county or anything. We just did it. Best thing we ever did. Have not gotten a call from anyone complaining yet. Thank God, they would get an ear full!!!!
