Whole house fans

Anyone on here have one in their home? I know Ibstrokin does, but he says he never uses it. I'm just curious if you use the fan and how well they work. My grandparents used to have one when I was a kid and with the windows cracked it damn near felt like a wind tunnel in the house.
With the cost of utilities going up, I've been thinking more and more about them.

My mom's house has one. I lived there back in 1999, and it was awesome. We turned it on in the evening and it sucked all the hot air out and cooled the house off quickly.

I have one and it is on now!! This weather is perfect for it!! Cool evenings..... When the evenings are cool I run it. It works great for that!! I also run it in the morning to cool off the attic if it's going to be warm. Will turn on the air shortly. Got pretty warm today!!

Yeah, its a fan that mounts between the ceiling and attic.

No. An attic fan is mounted in the roof and only vents your attic.

A whole house fan goes generally in the middle of the ceiling hallway on the top floor and pulls air from the entire house and to the attic.

This is perfect weather for a whole house fan.
Don't get the old style one with louvers they loose hot and cold air in summer and winter. You will make up the $6-$700 energy saving in 1-2 years dependent upon your house size. Plus they are a piece of cake to install.

You want to get a Tamarack they are awesome and very quiet.

Had one in our house growing up. Just crack the window in each room an inch or 2..would pull all the cool basement air up to the rest of the house..worked great. It was mounted right at the top of the 2nd floor stairs.

They are awesome. It is the one I am going to put in here soon. A buddy put one in last spring. They are great. Quiet and very easy to install. Plus with the remote you don't have to run any wiring downstairs. Just plug it in upstairs to a 110 and you are golden.

My granddfather's house had one, damn thing would about lift you off the floor in the hallway when you walked underneath it. It sure did keep his house reasonably cool.

I have a few family members that have one and they love it. I would like to have one also but i'm sure there not cheap

I have one and use it all the time...it's amazing how much and quick they will pull the hot air out of the house!
