trying to get my car running again after replacing head gaskets, and now it will fire and run, but when i shut it down it won't fire back up.

i'm out of ideas as to why. it was under 150 degrees when i tried to start it again. it's getting fuel(this is carbed by the way). it has a good charge. this engine does have less than 500 miles on it still though. could it just be tight, and stubborn?

Is it trying to turn over but after it warms up it wont? Like it is strugeling to turn it over once warm? If so double check your timing. Might Be to far advanced.

yeah. it starts right up when cold, but when i shut it off after it has been running it won't fire up again. it turns, and turns, and turns. it's almost like there is no fuel, but that is there. so that should mean no spark.

pull your plugs clean them up and try might have flooded it being it was the first time it's started you probably pumped the hell out of it in aggravation,or pull #1 see if it's getting spark

What's your base timing set at?

Before you try to start it after it's been sitting, look down in the carb and see if the throttle blades are wet. If they are then your accelerator pumps are probably too tight and are leaking, causing it to flood while sitting parked.

If it starts up cold then you know you're getting spark...that's not an issue. What kind of carb?

the carb is a holley 750dp, which is probably too much carb for it. base timing i will have to find where that is written down. i'm trying to get it to run to get it to cincy speed for a good tune lol

When I had a big carb like that on my 302 it did the same thing till I switched to a 600.

when you shut it off pull the plugs and see if there is alot of fuel on them. Also try to start it with it wide open. I think it is flooding. but I dont know a whole lot.

i'll try that tonight when i get home from work. i don't think that the weather is going to hold off for me to go to a cruise in with the lightning. so i've got some things to do to the car lol.

Definitely sounds flooded to me. It starts ok when it's cold because all the fuel has evaporated off the plugs and out of the cylinders. When you go to start it and it's acting up, avoid pumping the gas as much as you can...crank it over for a few seconds and then just press the pedal down and hold it and see if it starts easier that way.

it seems to be being good now...the valves are just making too much noise now.

Did you adjust them like this?

For your hydraulic camshaft and with both valves closed, get zero lash at the rockers and then give an additional 1/4 turn preload for iron heads and 3/4 turn preload for aluminum heads. The easiest way to determine that both valves are closed is to look at the rotor within the distributor cap and set the valves on the cylinder at which the rotor is alligned with in the cap. You'll just bump the engine over either watching the rotor in the cap to set each cylinder or every 90° on the damper while you follow the firing order if you start with #1.

we adjusted them 1/4 turn then locked, but i do have aluminum heads so we should have done the 3/4. thanks!

No problem

You may also wanna check and see if the cam says anything about how to adjust the rockers. My AFM cam card says a full turn past zero lash, not 3/4.

so it's starting when it is warm again-it was timing. now i just need to finish the valves, and i'll be out again! woot
