Ok I can start my car cold and drive it up the road, when I get about a 1/4 up the road or car starts to warm up it starts missing.

Its a really bad miss. If I let off the gas it will idle, If I hit the gas to try to make it move it will just start to die and pop really bad. Kinda like the car is bucking.

I checked the plugs, they look good. I cleaned the distributer cap. New wires. new fuel pump. Could it be the timing? I dont know I need some help asap!

The car is speed density.

TFI module or maybe the coil?

How hard are the TFI modules to change?

My 86 did that on the way back from Taco bell a couple years ago.I swapped out the Distributor for one from Advanced.I think it was from advanced.Cleared it right up.
The Module and the PIP in the dizzy are known for going bad.

I changed the TFI and still popping. checked timing. 11 deg.

It is lean really lean. There is popping coming out my intake. Tore the intake down and im going to put the top half back on a little slower this time.

Any other ideas?

So you just changed the module. Some times the PIP (profile Ignition Pickup) goes bad.

What work did you do to the car before this problem began?

I think he just put an engine in it

Gotta love the break-in blues

yes I did lol. But it ran great. I had just put my upper and lower on AGAIN lol. So I think my lower gasket is shot. I am out side now putting a new one on, without the cork front and rears. Im using the rubber ones instead. Coil Is brand new. Everything is new on the car except the short block.

I am leaning toward o2 sensors... only because Steves LX chased that demon forever and it turned out after putting brand new o2's in it, he found out that he had a bad o2 sensor harness...

Unhook your o2 sensor harness and see if it goes away... The car will run in open loop and shouldnt act retarded if the harness or o2's are bad.

ok When I hooked up the fuel pressure tester I had 20 psi when I turned key forward.
When I started it the fuel pressure was at 35/36.
When I unplugged the vaccum on fuel pressure reg it was at 40.
when I blimped the throttle the fuel pressure dropped to about 30.
When I shut it off the pressure didnt stay there it had only about 15 pounds after about 3 minutes.

Can anyone tell me if this is right?

Sounds about right... although the bleed off seems a little too quick... although that wouldnt be the first fox I've seen with 3-5 minute bleed off. I'm used to my sn95... that thing takes a half hour to bleed.

Did you try your o2 sensor harness yet?

I had same issue on my 93 vert. I changed the dist., plugs, coil, and wires. That didnt work so long story short I cleaned the EGR valve really good and it started running great. Might be worth a try?

1992MustangDW
05-12-2009, 10:55 AM
Yes, I was going to call back but it was late. I havnt ever had o2 sensors on it and it ran really good b-4. Plus I dont have an 02 harness to try one.

1992MustangDW
05-13-2009, 12:32 PM

Might take a few key cycles for the ECU to relearn...

When I put 24# injectors in my '94 without swapping the MAF it ran like absolute crap for about 2 days... now I can start the car and it will actually Idle... Give it time, don't give up on it yet...

Better yet... convert it to Mass Air! :bigthumb

I had the same problem on an '88 once. Only difference is once it warmed up it would also get the RPM's up to about 2k and stay. After changing every sensor, removing, adding, and cleaning, I took the salt and pepper wiring harness apart behind the intake. I cleaned up the connecting pins and holes and BOOM! it was fixed.

Just a thought...

I will check that out. Thanks for everyones input. I should change it to mass air.
