Don't get me wrong, i have 2 kids, one of which is a baby girl. When she sprouts knockers i don't want her doing the same, but c'mon! Making them register as a sexual predator for the rest of their life is going to RUIN their life all over some stupid childhood lack of judgement. Next thing you know, teens getting caught masturbating will be charged with statutory rape.

But this registering as a sexual predator is a bit over the top. I could see some community service, and public apologies, etc to embarrass the crap out of them and set them straight would be good, but c'mon!

This issue should not have involved anyone but the parents of the kids involved. The phone gets taken away, end of story! I look through my daughter's phone every once in a while. Sometimes when she is right there, and sometimes not.

I really don't see alot of naked pics on Facebook. I belive that it caters to a more adult crowd IMHO. But now Myspace thats just reduclious what goes on there. Thank God my son is only 2. I would definetly fly off the handle if he did some sh!t like that.

The problem with this is that just because you're a minor doesn't mean you can't actually BE a sexual predator. I'm sure there's 15 year olds who go and rape people who fully deserve it, i just think some common sense is in order here and the interpretation of the law needs to be worked on a bit. We're talking about an otherwise good kid who may have just been peer pressured into something who now won't be able to get into the college they want and won't be able to get that job they want and will be cast down their whole life all over a cell phone pic.

A new Tri-State push could make Ohio one of the first states in the nation to change how it handles teenagers sexting each other.

Warren County Prosecutor Rachel Hutzel and two lawmakers want to discourage teens from sending racy pictures through their cellphones by making penalties more appropriate for the offense.

The proposed legal change was announced at a Monday morning news conference at the Warren County Courthouse in Lebanon. The lawmakers and other leaders are increasingly worried about teens under the age of 18 sending nude or sexually explicit camera phone pictures of themselves to other teens.

Currently, teens could face felony child pornography charges which could force them on to sexual offender registries for as long as 20 years.

Leaders want to change that by reducing penalties for sexting teenagers to a first degree misdemeanor.


Dr. Parry Aftab from the national support group called Wired Safety flew in from New York City to support the proposal. She said the proposal would be one of the first of its kind in the country. "This bill could be a model for national legislation. I will take this idea to Washington," Dr. Aftab said.

Aftab said she'll suggest the law be named after Jessica Logan. She's the Sycamore High School student who took her own life last year after being embarrassed by a nude picture of herself that was circulated on cell phones among her classmates and others. Jessica's mother and father, Cynthia and Burt Logan, also attended the news conference and support the proposal.

Prosecutor Hutzel said current laws that handle sexting are "too over the top," causing teenagers who make a mistake and show poor judgment to become criminals.

Dr. Aftab said the law should apply to incidents where sexually explicit pictures are sent over cellphones as well as computers or other high tech devices.

Also on hand for Monday's news conference was Kevin Bright, Superintendent of Mason City Schools, which has had problems with sexting among its students. Hutzel and others hope they can win enough support for their sexting proposal to get their bill through the Ohio Legislature and on to Governor Ted Strickland's desk before the end of the year.

Why not have the pic sent to the parents phone by default (if the kid is a minor), then the parent screens the picture, then sends it along if the parent deems? Parents are still responsible for their minor children aren't they? It seems like this would easy to do, and would cut down on it a ton. I know the kids would raise hell, but they are minors, and there aren't any laws requiring parents to supply camera phones.

Its is a free country, which to me means stay the hell out of other peoples buissness, and as far as i am concerned that is definitely intrusion. if it was a 14 year old and a 22 year old, i would understand, but two kids, get real, let the parents do what they are supposed to, and if they choose not to care, then that is there choice, this is why we live in AMERICA.

now thats what is rediculous, if a 16 year old girl or boy did it, its CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES, but if they robbed the local conveinant store at that age, then there tried as adults? i wish they'd make up there minds, there either a child or a young adult, not either or depending on the charge or nature of the offence

Funny story....me and my first live-in GF went crazy with the polaroid. We split up and i took all of them plus a bunch of stupid stuff like love letters and lace stuff and put all of it in this old briefcase i had and i put it in my truck behind the seat with the intention of giving it to her when i saw her next. Well, before i saw her, some asshole broke into my truck and stole the briefcase :lol:

There are plenty of options for a young member of our society if they register as a sex offender before they are 18. Of course, finishing high school would just be a waste as there is money to be made on the street. Think of the opportunities that are made available when your labeled for the rest of your life at such a tender age.

I agree with you guys completely...the laws in some areas have gotten completely out of hand. You can't legislate common sense. Not only should this not be a felony, it shouldn't be a crime at all. It's just teenagers being stupid and having bad judgement...the usual at that age. The laws regarding drugs have gone crazy too. There is zero tolerance for drugs in school, which at first sounds good, but I was reading a case where a school strip searched a 13 year old middle school girl looking for ibuprophen...they didn't find any. It's taken 6 years but the case is now going to the Supreme Court. The girl was a model student and another girl who was in trouble "fingered" her when ibuprophen fell out of her planner (she had borrowed the planner from the other girl sometime earlier). The school didn't call the police or the parents...after being interrogated by the vice-principal, they made her go to the Nurse's office and strip down in front of the nurse and another female adult. The kid was seriously traumitized as she had never been in trouble for anything before...she was only 13 and a good kid.
I don't think anyone here wants their kid strip searched for an aspirin. How the hell can you get high on a mild pain reliever anyway? The girls probably carry that stuff for cramps. The District court at first ruled for the school and their explanation was really lame...the appellate judge really blasted the District court and overturned it...saying the District court needed to show common sense. The school appealed that so it's going to the top. I hope the Supreme court rules for the parents. People who are in authority just need to show a little common sense and look at what is really happening when it comes to kids and not just hide behind a law as their authority. I have a 15 year old boy in high school so this stuff really hits home with me...heck my kid just skipped school on sophomore skip day and I was all over him because of it. Yeah, they don't wait till they're seniors anymore for that stuff...time is moving faster for them than it was for us. OK, I'm sorry, rant over.

Child Pornography Charges = the actual pics of minors participating in sexual acts, or nudity. Not, being tried as a child for pornography. If anything they ARE being tried as adults distributing child pornography. Just to clear.
