Hey it was new stuff in 1896.
Besides I expect to see electrically actuated valves soon. Then to computer can run them and adjust the timing of them on the fly and per cylinder. Much less mechanical drag on the engine. Which saves horsepower.

Variable cam timing and lift, also able to shut down a cylinder randomly and NOT having the pumping loss of trying to compress that cylinder by hanging an exhaust valve slightly opening.

Or get really crazy and build a pneumatic valve setup for them and then you would have something cool ;)
