My brother owned a merkur and thought that thing was the fastest car on the street.:lol::lol:

I still like the Merkur's, in fact asside from the looks, they didn't really have anything negative to say about them.

Hey now, Merkurs are badass! They were way ahead of their time and were very nice cars in the '80s. Hell the interior is nicer than a lot of new cars today...not all plasticy and bland, and the seats were made by Recaro. Yeah maybe not the fastest thing on the street but they would out handle just about anything on the road in the '80s and if you get one today and update all the old stock bushings with urathane bushings they'll still out handle most of the cars on the road today. I have a buddy who autox's one, and the engine is 100% bone stock but he's gone through the suspension and updated a lot of things, and he routinely hands STi's and Evo's their asses in the cones.

Well, you've got to call 'em like you see 'em..... :)

Personally, I think that list is a crock. With the exception of the Thunderbird, look at what else was on the market when the rest of those cars were new. Sure, the Vega sucks by 2009 standards, but in 1971 what else was introduced on the market (remember, Motor Trend COTY is for new model introductions or significant redesigns) that would have warranted the award? Same thing goes for the Alliance in 1983 or the Merkur in 1985. These were significant changes to the status-quo for the automotive world...just because they didn't live up to their promise in the long term, they still deserved the award at the time.

I never knew you were into renaults and citations. I know where to find several of each of them really cheap if you need a deal!

We had a customer that kept bringing one here for us to work on. We seriously pondered whether or not it would be worth burning the car and letting the insurance pay for it!? (just kidding)

one of my favorite racecar drivers Always drove a chevy vega and that thing was bad ass. Bill "grumpy" Jenkins.

america should've gotten the sierra rs500 cosworth...same for the escort cosworth but no, we got the crappy escort and the less-cool merkur.

+1 on bill jenkins...dude's one of the best stick drag racers of all time.

the t-bird and catera remind me of two things from my old job at a drive-thru liquor store. some old guy with a bad hair piece came in every 2 days in a yellow t-bird and got a half gallon of clan mcgregor scotch...like 17.50 a half gallon, shit is cheap but he acted like a high roller all the time. this other time, a 22-23 year old kid in a catera went on and on about his catera that was pushing 400hp...it had a vette motor, blah blah this and that. i'm afraid he had it mistaken with a friggin cts-v but he was dead serious.

They picked some of them as "best cars" then bash them as dishonorable mention. IMHO, Car and Driver and Motortrend suck as magazines. They're for the uppity ups that take their car to have the oil changed in it. I'd rather read CC or HR and I don't care for either one of them too.
