So i've been doing alot of reading and looking into a new setup for this coming year.

I've acquired a 306 shortblock not too long ago and today picked up a few more things.

It started with going to Wakeman Ohio to Buschur Racing to drop off a friend of mine's high 9/low 10sec Evo to get a re-tune on the bigger turbo. He mentioned that he wanted to go to Summit, bad news for me.

I ended up leaving a few $$$'s in debt

I picked up a QA1 K-member kit, rear upper and lower control arms, RHS alum. cyl. heads, rockers, lifters (that i realized they didnt put in the parts so i have to have them ship me another set) and a few other things to get the new motor together.

i still need to buy a trans-brake valve body, converter, and few other small things. The plan is to start pulling it apart tomorrow

*Update*
I drove it into the shop tonight and started taking things apart. My brother and I got the engine ready and eventually got it pulled out and then got to pulling the dash to get rid of the heater core and blower motor assembly. Im planning on trailering the chassis to my friend on friday or saturday to have the cage finish welded in.

Here's the pics:

We got the OEM K member and front suspension out and getting the chassis ready for the cage and strengthening.
took out all the wiring out of the car to start making a harness for the whole car.
the cage and subframe connectors are going on tomorrow.along with cleaning up the engine bay and filling the small holes and getting it all together and hopefully it'll be done by racing season

*Update 1/3/09*

So work started on bracing the strut towers that will eventually be tied into the cage when it goes in tomorrow with the subframe connectors being tied to the cage.
Got everything all done, going to be making the 2nd braces tomorrow that will tie to the cage and cleaning up the engine bay and painting it so it'll look 1/2 way decent. Also went through and did some rust repair on the frame rail, and welded up some of the seams for strength.

Tomorrow's plan is to prep and paint the engine bay, put the k member and coilovers in, and get it set down on its wheels as a roller.

Here's today's progress pics:

thanks, its been a joint effort with me, my younger brother, and a friend of mine at his repair shop after hours.
it wont look like a sleeper for long, 8pt cage.. cowl hood... it wont be street driven much anymore.. maybe 50miles a month

*update 1/4/09*
Started off by preping and painting the engine bay, then got the new K member in after fighting with it for a while. im not that happy with QA1, they require you to reuse or buy new hardware for mounting the k member and their coilovers dont come with a replacement bump stop.

i need to buy a set spindles so we can set the car on the ground. a few other little things and the coilover assembly will be going in the car and it'll be getting set down to get the cage

Thanks for the comments. i picked up my camera from the shop (got 1/3 of the way home and realized i left it there) and got some pics from last week

here's all the engine bay all cleaned up, painted, k member and lower control arms installed.

On friday, got the subframe connectors on and started to fit the cage in the car.
i desperately need to find a set of 87-93 spindles from a v8 car, or find a set from a turbo coupe. as you can see from the last pic the coilovers arent even close to lineing up due to the orientation of the bracket.

*update 1/19/09*

So i met a guy who's going to be building my engine yesterday, and it turns out i dont have to buy a set of spindles. He modified a set of stock one's to use the same coilovers on his big block car that run's 8.80's on one of 2 stages of spray and will land alot harder than mine. So i got out the carbide cutter and whittled down a little spot so they clear. Tomorrow (since i dont have class) i'll be out getting it down on the wheels so i can put it on the lift and start on the cage install welding it to the frame/subframe.

Oh and i forgot to mention, I'm going a different route for a motor. With how i was planning on building the 306 to building a 351w stroker.

The plan is a forged 408 and try to get the compression to ~12.5-13.5 for spray.

I'll keep updating as progress happens

A05C
01-24-2009, 03:32 AM
so after grinding the spindles down to clear the coilover/strut assembly, been trying to source parts to work.

i'm going to reuse my power steering rack (without power steering) i had to buy some new bushings so it will work with the new K member.

so the rack will go on tomorrow and it'll go on the car and then we'll push the car over to the rack and we'll get started on the cage and finish the rest of the chassis work.

i'll take pics tomorrow

So the other day got the front end all put together and got it set as a roller so the work on the cage and the fab work can start. Took some pics of the other parts i had already, but the new converter came in. I'll have enough money to pick up my stroker kit and get it to my machinist. Callies cranks in Fostoria will be doing my balancing for me, my engine builder is in with them and he's going to get me a good deal.
It needs to be April already, I'm ready to go racing

i hope, i'm looking into having my weld's, valve covers, and a few other little things powdercoated.

i really want to paint or powdercoat everything in the engine bay black except for the Cylinder heads (which are aluminum)

I'm also looking for a cowl hood for the car, i doubt a 351 victor Jr, with a plate system on top will clear the stock hood

Subframe connectors are welded in place, going out to the shop today to finish installing the main hoop, then going to get the rear down bars put into place and tacked. then the upper hoop and the front down bars are going in place

Still in the middle of figureing out which head/cam combo to go with for the 408 (410) i should be ordering the stroker kit this coming weekend. i'll have pics later today when i get home

Well its not going as fast as i'd like it to be, i only get to work on it during the weekends. i have class during the week and its about ~25 miles from my house at my friends shop.

The only big things that need done are:
1)getting the stroker kit to Callies for balencing and then to my builder for assembly
2)finish the cage
3)put the trans brake in the trans.

Im still debating on which cam to go with. i've been tlaking to people and thinking about selling my X303 cam and switching over to a set of AFR heads and run a solid lifter and actually turn the motor to 7500 on nitrous. i've been looking at comp's nitrous cams and it seems like it'll be better for my application. the solid roller will let me turn the motor and make power up top and i wouldnt have to switch out gears and stuff.

i'm still talking to my builder and going to figure out what the best plan should be.

Well after talking to my engine builder, i'm going to a solid roller setup. that and im going to take my RHS aluminum heads and exchange them for AFR's

I built a 331 with RHS heads for my brother.....

it runs with AFR headed cars of similiar build....

For that fact my old Roush 200s hung with similiar built 306s with afrs too....

AFR make a great product no doubt but .......:)

A05C
02-16-2009, 11:47 AM
Well after talking to my builder, i would have to have alot of machine work done to accept a larger spring and i'de have to swap out all of the valve train anyways (locks, springs, retainers, guides) for going to a solid roller. Especially when going to a much larger spring with the significantly higher seat pressure and so i can run .650+ lift for a nitrous specific cam.

Plus with the AFR head, it'll already be CNC ported and have a larger valve than the RHS that i have. Plus the AFR head has all of the pieces that i'd need to change on my RHS head to run the larger cam (springs, locks, retainers) and the spring pocket is already machined to run the larger spring and allow for more lift (up to .710 out of the box). Also, the AFR heads flow significantly more than the largest RHS head offered.

So if you ask me it'll be a wiser decision, i'll have a few hundred more dollars in the head exchange. But it'll save me the money in parts to convert the RHS heads, and then i'd still have to spend alot of money in port work just to equal an out of the box AFR CNC ported for a few hundred more. To me, it'd be worth just paying the extra money the first time around instead of being limited by a cylinder head just to save some money.

The piston part # denotes a 40 over piston.... 10672-040

4.000 stroke divided by 2 = 2.0+ 6.250+ 1.235= 9.485

4.030 stroke divived by 2 = 2.015 + 6.250 + 1.235 = 9.5

A05C
03-21-2009, 05:33 PM
Thanks for bringing that to my attention. i went on probe's site and realized i had made a mistake about that.

they are a .040 piston. just have to make sure that the rods wont put the piston out of the deck very much or at all.

i guess i was just looking at the sticker and it said .030 piston. without reading the part number. My fault

A05C
03-21-2009, 06:03 PM
i did the similar equation as you and came up with 9.505

with the .040 bore

A05C
03-21-2009, 07:52 PM
so the pistons are .040 i measured them with a micrometer to get a rough guess and their 4.0390 plus or minus a small amount.

after talking to a few guys on yellowbullet. and one of them being part of probe industries.

the pistons are correct (.040) and the 6.250 rod is used for a reason
i had orgionally wanted a piston that the pin would not be in the oil ring.

and they did that which im glad. i figured that the longer rod's were accidently put in there.

So basically. its all correct and they sent me the parts they did for a reason.

... Possibly.....:D

I've got a bunch of things to do before i buy a turbo and stuff. The plan is, to convert my nitrous motor to a pump/race gas street motor

Already talked to my friend that work's for comp cams' for a custom turbo cam

and its kinda small
.662/.622
248/248 duration at .050
and a 114 LSA

Since i've got a friend of mine that also works for TCI Automotive the converter i've got should be a decent one to get started on then eventually i'll probably switch the converter. But that all depends on if i keep the C4 in it. Sure its got hard parts in it, and good clutches.. but it's hard telling how long its going to last with a healthy 410ci with probably a 90+mm turbo out front.

My friend that works for TCI, is going to be building the whole hot side of the system and probably the i/c for the car also.

My intentions are to point the turbo out the front grill and just run a smaller radiator or pair of radiators.

The weakest link in the whole thing will be the block (stock ungirdled and unfilled 74' windsor block), the trans and the rear.

But not like there's a deadline to get it done, just goin to have fun with it and try to go reasonably fast on pump gas.

Here's another teaser picture, this isn't mine but a friend of mines
http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z18/a05c/justinsturbo.jpg

Note that picture is not of me, and was taken by the owner of the turbo and is his co worker holding the turbo

that i might be able to get my hands on pending how things work with another friend of mine's 3rd gen Camaro he's putting a 402ci LS based turbo motor in. If it doesn't work out good on his, and i haven't bought a turbo yet.. i'll probably pick it up off of him and try it on my setup

Here within a few week's i'll be selling the Aluminum radiator i have, and a bunch of small parts to cover some of the costs in the converting.

Oh and i'm also thinking about swithing to either a PG or a TH400 to handle the hefty amount of power that the car has the potential of making.

And finally,

I'm accepting donations, and sponsorships to pay for things ;) haha

Well i've done the math, and the airflow to make a good decent amount of power is 118.9cfm. and at a pressure ratio of 2.2 takes me to the range of a GT4708 which is a 108mm compressor. I've talked to the guy who run's www.forcedinductions.com and he's recommended a GT5018.

We'll see though, should be interesteing when i lift the hood off and all you see is a large turbo, a SBF, and a carb :)
