The all knowing me.

So heres the jist-

My 99 Grand prix has 215k on it. My upper intake manifold gasket has been slowly failing the last year and now it is completely failed. My radiator is just about filled with oil along of course is all my coolant passages etc...
It's so bad the car will start to get hot at idle because of the consistency of the oil water mixture trying to squeeze through the system....

here is where the shitty part comes in and the topic of what I am looking for advice for.

My credit is not strong, I'm 20 and only have 2 years of history. I won't ask my folks to co sign because they just paid off all my credit card debt.
I only have about 750 bucks cash to put down.
I have a shop bill of over $500 for my Mustang that hasnt been paid yet either.

With out laying out all my finances, put it this way, I can easily afford a car payment....I just can't get a loan! And as you can tell, I don't save money. (A function of being 20....or something...:tard:)

I am going to talk to Kemba CU in Beechmont as I hear they are easy to get a loan through however I am going to assume for planning purposes that I will not get approved.

My job(s) require that I drive almost 150 miles a day at the minimum and sometimes 400 miles or more.

I can only limp this car around for a few more days (put it in neutral when stopped to rev the h20 pump)

Based on all this--
What do you think the best way to handle this is?

Thanks

Borrow a car from your parents and fix the gasket.

I have a friend that declaired bankruptcy a few years back. The day he got his papers that it all finallized he went out and got a loan for a car. With the way things are there are places giving great deals with zero down. You may have to take a higher intrest rate but at least you will have a good car.

The car has 220k on the clock. Not worth it. And I have no means of making the repair. The cost to make the repair is over $700

A high risk loan may be my only option. Thanks.

I am with Blackhorse fix the car and start saving to get a newer car. I have done intake gaskets on Gms before they are not $700 hard. Get a book and some motivation and fix it yourself.

Timido, I simply can't do it myself. I live in a condo, parents don't have the room to let me take the garage up for as long as I would need. And quite honestly I can't fuggin do the job. I am incapable.

It would be like asking you to program a SQL database....it's not hard if you know what you are doing. In this case, I don't know what I am doing. At all.

I would never say you are incapable. If you can figure out your programing stuff, you can figure out how to remove an intake and replace the gaskets. Finding a mechanic in these troubled times who wants to make a couple bucks is alot easyier than giving up on the car.

Borrow a car from your parents and fix the gasket.x3.

Pay someone on here (from the $750) to fix the Intake gasket.

Save up your $$ and buy something better down the road.

Don't get into MORE debt! You WILL regret it.

you could always pay some one from here to fix it and help them that way you are learning at the same time. everyone starts somewhere. i started hanging out with my dad in the garage when i was small and that how i learned alot. even if you do get a loan for a car try fixing this one and sell it then. that way you can pay the loan down and still learn some mechanical.

Buy one of those new 08 GT's for $18995 lol... Brand new cars are SOOO easy to get approved for, and at that price point, you basically can't lose money on one.

Have you looked at a haynes manual or anything to try and figure out how much work doing this job on your specific car would take? I am sure that there are people on here that would not mind helping you out if you just ask them nicely and haven't been a dick to them in the past.

Let's look at it a different way - you are good at things, other folks can fix your car. You show them how to set up their home network, make Vista work or whatever and they can help show you how to fix the gasket. You both learn, you get your car fixed for peanuts and you walk away with maybe a new friend or two.

Buy here, pay here lot, $500 down will get you a decent, then figure $75 a week payment.

When I was coming out of bankruptcy in 1990 it is what I had to do. I went to Mason Autosales on 42, between Autozone and Donatos. Not sure if it is still under the same ownership, but I bought three cars thru him. Nothing major ever went wrong, just they needed exhausts after about 6 months of ownership.

First Escort got totalled, second Escort had no issues, ended up trading it in on a 87 Cavalier that served me well until I bought my first Honda.

I think what I am going to do is just by a beater then start saving.
I was able to pony up about a grand so that should get me in to something that will get me from point a to b.

JAD0087 - I will holler at your friend in case I change my mind. Thank you. Sincerely. What is that persons name?

They aren't under the same ownership. An indian guy owns it now. My dad used to do all the body work for them.

And the buy here pay here lot is just about the dumbest thing you can do. Talk about getting your head blown off.

$1995 car + tax and title + interest, 52 payments of $50 a week.

I've bought from buy here pay here lots. Its the only thing you can do sometimes when no one wants to give you a loan and you can't afford a huge monthly payment  I've bought from Larry's here in Amelia. A Chrysler Lebaron vert, Pontiac Bonneville, Mustang GT and a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. He has some good cars. I've sent a friend and my father had bought from him....

You may want to check out this site about GM's 3.1 intake gasket failures. A lot of folks have been compensated because of the failures.

Well you're 20 and kinda neck deep in the manure pile right now. Take your 1000 bucks buy yourself a decent beater and fix your daily driver when you can. When it's fixed and you have the money saved to buy something else, then do it.

It's time to grow up and take responsibility, everything in life isn't going to be easy. Take it from the older crowd who's already been in your shoes, get your priorities in order. Pay off that shop bill on the Mustang and get yourself some credit.

I cant see that intake costing $700. Someones trying to bend you over. I could find you a complete engine for that thing for that. Those cars always blow intake gaskets, and if you have a good day to got on it, you could fix it to atleast sell it and re-coop most of your money back... In this economy, take no losses...
