Don't know what it is but I am pretty sure it shouldn't be in your oil pan.

looks like a roller off one of the rocker arms. get a pic of it next to a dime or something so we can reference the size.

Does look like one. Hard to believe it would fall off though without really tearing up something.

To be honest, if you've already pulled the motor pop off the valve covers and check the followers. Just to be on the safe side.

If it IS one, you have bigger problems than just head work now.

could have fallen down threw the timing cover none of the pistons have holes in them that I can see.

can anyone get me some torque specs on rod bearing and main bearings?

If you are using ARP bolts you can get them on the ARP website. If you are using new OEM bolts They are Torque to yield you need an angle guage. If you are reusing stock bolts I don't know what to tell you. Maybe a few prayers with each one. That part looks liek a differential or manual transmission tapered bearing to me.

They are TTY. As above says use ARP bolts. However if you want risk it below are the specs:
Step 1: 15 to 18
Step 2: 30 to 33
Step 3: Rotate an additional 90 deg
I wouldn't though.
Also if you haven't already I'd pull the crank and check the bearings there as well. And then I'd take the block and have it flushed. You probably have bearing material in every crack and crevice. You should pull the oil pump off as well and clean it out. I ended up replacing the oil pickup tube and pump just because of the amount of material in it. IMO your just asking for trouble putting a dirty block back together. Be aware if you do pull the main caps those are TTY as well and would need to be replaced.

Rather than getting the crank turned, I have a good stocker sitting here for 20 bucks. It is out of a 4.6 2V, should be a drop in. You can't really use the rods again if they have had a bearing spin in them, and I am not sure if anyone is reconditioning them yet. They do offer an oversized bearing for larger big ends after reconditioning, but it would take someone that has done it before to get it right. Good luck! The first ones are always the toughest!

so did you figure out what it was?
Looks like the roller off a rocker. I am not sure though without seeing it.

When pulling the drivers side off, make sure you reach behind and press the gasket in the groove of the valve cover. TAKE YOUR TIME!!!! and don't snag the gasket. They will become fagile, but they are still reuseable. Also, when you put the cover back on make sure it seals. It will make a mess if you don't.

ok thank you.. hey do you know what kind of grease to use on rod bearing when i get that far? or the steps it take this is my first rodeo, also do you just put grease on the side that touches the crank and not the other side?

I use STP oil treatment. On all bearing surfaces liberally.

i use federal mogul assembly lube. They sell it at autozone. Put it on just the side that touches the crank. That stuff is real tacky.

I'm certain that the part you found is one of the rollers out of a tapered roller bearing(how in the hell it got there is anyones guess)...like these...

I was thinking maybe off the front bearing that's in the timing cover. I think that's a bearing or is that a seal? That's pretty sad that I rebuilt my motor and don't remember that....lol.

seal on the front cover there Corey. If you put a bearing in you may develop problems later on :D

glad you got it put back together so soon. as long as the compression is good you should be alright with the bearings.
