I think that looks great, I'm gonna want Maggy's valve covers done once the turbo swap begins. Can your oven do a Cobra upper intake?

It is not recommended to do the high temps in the same gun you do other powders. So at the moment I'm not doing high temps. I'm hoping to invest in a nicer gun very soon so when I do I'll start using my current gun and doing high temp powder. I figure come winter alot of guys may have their engines apart which would be a great time to do some headers.

The chrome ones I have pictured are for sale for $60. If you trade me a set of yours you can have them for $40. If you just want to send me a set to do as long as they are cleaned up and degreased I will do any regular color for $40 and chrome for $50. If there is other stuff you want done just let me know and I'll pm you a price.

I can get pretty much anykind but pretty much everything I have on hand is a polyester TGIC. If there is something specific you want let I should be able to accomodate.

Ryan just get me a list of what you need done, it should not be a problem at all. Just keep in mind that whatever you need done should be able to withstand 400deg temps. So doing parts like 2 piece balancers is not a good idea.

How high of temperature can the powdercoating hold up to?

Most powders cure in the 375-400 range. They should be fine below that and even a bit hotter for shorter durations. I believe sustained high temps can discolor it. I'm hoping to have a new gun soon so I can use my old one for high temp powders. They will withstand temps in the 1200deg range. How hot does the hot side of a turbo get? BTW thanks for the compliments guys.

I love it!

Kenny, cant I put black paint in the grooves of the upper intake without hurting anything? Will it wipe off of the rest of the raised lines fairly easy?

mustangboy
11-10-2008, 09:43 PM
Yeah Jesse you could do that, just have a damp cloth handy as you do it to wipe off the excess. I've heard of guys using model paint to do some detail work like you want.

Bill I am currently using a normal kitchen oven but I've built an extension for it that will allow me to do parts approx 40" long. If things go well I've already got my eye on an oven that will allow me to do parts at least 5' long.

I don't think you will have to look too hard. I'm sure your garage looks like a car blew up in there. While you got everything apart this is the perfect time to get some stuff done. Maybe I'll have to start a bulk discount. BTW the car is coming along nicely:bigthumb

You can't do all types of plastic however there are some like LS-X chevy intakes and covers that seem to hold up to the temps. You also do them at a lower temp just for a longer period of time. If anyone has a junk plastic intake from a Ford I would love to try to do one of those.

No not doing ceramics yet. That may be a ways down the road. It takes a special gun and the paint is very expensive. I do plan to start doing high temp powders soon which will withstand temps in 1200deg range. Timido had his headers powdered 3yrs ago and they are still holding up really well.

85_SS_302_Coupe
11-12-2008, 12:49 PM
I've heard that for some reason, white powdercoat holds up on headers really well...don't know if there's any truth to that. If i ever pull my headers off, i need to do something with them...they're Mac full lengths and they're rusted up pretty bad.

Yeah, I am debating whether to have a part or two powdercoated black. One of which I know will fit in your oven while the other I am not sure of. I'll get some dimensions for you so you can let me know if it will fit in your oven. It may be too big. We will be in touch.

Well I couldn't stand not having gun so while my new replacement was being shipped I went ahead and bought another one. The guy I got it from also had some powder he gave me so I thought I would play with a few colors tonight. Here's a pic from my cell phone of the intake that Kenny powdercoated.

I will vouch for how strong these coatings are... I forgot I put it in the trunk of my Lincoln and was driving it sorta hard when I heard it roll around in the trunk... whoops...

So I pulled it out of the trunk and looked at it... The brace in the trunk whacked it hard on the ear of the intake... and if it were paint... it would have screwed it up BAD! But since it is powdercoat... It hardly even knicked it! :bigthumb

how much to coat a LT1 waterpump and motor plate?

It is recommended to do water pumps unless you can complety strip it down. The seals in them won't stand up to the cure temps. What are the dimensions on the motor plate, I did mine in the stang no problem, just let me know how big it is.

dsmawd350

the motor plate will fit in an oven no prob its actuall a left and right side plates so no bigger than 1'x1' each lmk on the price

and hmmm i had a PC'ed wp on the last car but idk if they stripped it down first or not

Here is what I messed with today. In person it does not look the greatest so it will probably just stripped and redone for fun. I had some overspray issues as I was trying alum foil to mask with. Also had some issues with stuff coming up thru the powder as I don't think I had the metal clean enough. I was just seeing how little prep I could get away with. I guess that is why they say practice makes perfect. Anyway it is the section of fender my brother did not use on his bike build and thought I would use to practice on. Mirror green and mirror yellow for you john deere and green bay fans.

OK I hope no one ever wants a set of these done. They are a bitch to strip, they have way to many small corners but I did manage to get them clean. First I started w/ a rattle can paint, second is partially thru the stripping and the last is done. Someone wanted to see what a wheel would look like if I did the very outer lip in chrome so I will do that later.

I have wanting to do something in black chrome and a set of Welds would be perfect. For best effect it would be best for you to polish them all pretty first as that powder is a translucent so the more polished they are the better they look.

Curing temp is 400deg. It appears that the dust boot may have suffered some very slight damage, not enought that I wouldn't still use it but to be honest it could have already been that way. I'm sure these have never been rebuilt so it means the rubber is around 20 years old. Rebuild kits are cheap enough.

Hey Steve I forgot to remind you about cleaning the covers. Powder is much more durable than regular paint but you still only want to clean it with the same stuff you would clean the paint on your car. Brake cleaner and harsh chemicals will cause it to discolor so if you do get gasoline or other such stuff just try to clean it off quickly so it does not get a chance to soak in for a while. Good luck with the cars and I hope we can do business again.

Here are a couple sample pieces I did last night. The darker one is called Solar Rain and it is a black transparent. The lighter one is black chrome and it does have more of a blue/gray tint to it. To get the best effect with these you need to lay them down over chrome or a nicely polished aluminum piece. Honestly I LOVE the solar rain, its a really wicked looking color.

You need your own sticky of pictures to use as a color chart!! I wish powdercoat would stick to body filler. I have a upper intake that has had some "bodywork" that needs color put on it

That is a great idea on the sticky, but that would be up to the mods. For future reference here is a link to a filler that will work with powder. http://www.alvinproducts.com/Content.asp?id=20

The best thing to do would bring it to me assembled and then we could go over all the parts to be done and I could see how they overlap each other. That way I could make sure there would not be any interference problems. I have plenty of red and black so I could do it anytime. Just let me know when you wanna come down.

Figured I would post this here, since most of you who view this are more knowledgeable than me... So I was thinking about getting my wheels powdercoated... but then decided by the time I do that, I might as well hold off and get the wheels I want.

Then I saw this post on afm.com which I just joined.... Do you guys think it will hold up for a couple years? I drive my car in the winter but keep it garaged and dont really use harsh wheel cleaners. I am starting to think of it as an option + it would be a quick and CHEAP fix for me till I can buy my 18inch wheels.

Honestly if you are not the craziest about your current wheels and are just looking for a short fix till you can afford what you really want, it is not a bad way to go. Then only thing I would have done differently is to use a product like Prep-All before shooting the primer. Key is getting the surface clean before you paint. I would guess it would hold up for a year maybe a little longer.
