For those of you with NOS bottles in the trunk

I stole this from another forum because of the severe damage this nitrous bottle have done to this car. Could you imagine if someone was in the back seat when this happened?

Another idiot improperly installed the blowdown tube on a bottle that was likely 2 pounds overfilled.

Same thing happened about 10 years ago in Columbus Ohio. Driver doubled up on the burst discs when he installed the blow down tube as well as the heater was wired wrong. With key off the heater was on full time, 15 lb NX bottle.

I am almost 100% certain that its user error that caused that. They could have doubled up on the burst disk or they could be one of those idiots that heat the bottles with a torch which causes metal fatigue. I have seen a burst disk rupture in person and it is no where near vilolent enough to do anythign remotely close that kind of damage.

I often wonder if those filling nitrous bottles take the time to check to see if they are up to date with their testing requirements.

I heard of one where the bottle ended up across the street in a neighbor's garage. Scarry stuff. What kind of car was that in? I can't tell. I see it has 4 doors so I am thinking ricer something or other.

The second one was a Nissan Maxima.

The Maxima had debris under it's tires, meaning the car was lifted off the ground long enough for parts of the car to end up under the tires.

That's really scary...i'm personally not a fan of nitrous because of stuff like this (more because of the price of refills and backfires and that crap). I think i'll stick with a blower or turbo if i want a power adder.

5 years from the date of manufactur.IF im not mistaken.After the date has expired it should be re-hydrotested and gets another recert' for another 5 years.Its stamped on the side of the bottle near the neck.Its a DOT certification.If some one is found FILLING the outdated bottles its like a 10 year 100,000 dollar fine.And if some one is found DRIVING with an outdated bottle its a pretty hefty fine also.Dont know that one yet.

Bottles are tested at two times what there supposed to hold.Unless its dented or scratched.They are put through some pretty good test's.Nitrous cylinders are pretty safe.Probly more safe than your gas tank.Its morans like the other few that have made a bad name for the tanks.If its mounted correctly and has the CORRECT burst disc it will be very safe.When i played Paintball i carried on the back of my marker a small 68CI carbon fiber wrapped compressed air tank that held more than 4 times the amount my nitrous tank holds.It held about 4500 psi.Im still here.:bigthumb

Nitrous Express released a bulletin about a year ago about some faulty burst disc. It might have been a factor, but I agree on mis-use and mis-installing. I ran a 1lb cylinder in the tail of my race bike for years, with no trouble. I'm now running a 2lb in the swing arm and still no probs. I think if used correctly, it's as safe as filling up your fuel tank...

Eh. This is very very rare. Scuba tank failures are more common.

I kept a 15 pounder in the trunk of my notch for years in FL with no issues.

More common but still pretty damn rare considering the huge numbers that are in service. Well there were some aluminum tanks sold years ago that did fail at a pretty alarming rate but no one will fill those any more.

There is some variety. Low pressure steel tanks (like I own) are filled to 2640. High pressure steels are filled to 3442. Common aluminum tanks are filled to 3000 or 3300 and composite tanks similar to those used for fire fighter SCBA's are filled to 4350

I always for the most part spray mine at 1150-1200. My bottle pressure in the summer has been as high as 1600 PSI. I had to put gloves on the one day just to get it out of the car and into a basin tub with cold water it was so hot.

I checked the date on mine and I have a bottle in the car that is from a brand new kit and it says on the regulator neck 10/05. I also have a Nitrous Works bottle that says 10/00. I cant find any other dates anywhere.

I couldnt actually find anything for a nitrous re-cert in SFI.
Department of Transportation handle's the re-cert.

And Steve,the bottle with the date of 10/00 is out of test.I could probly get it re-hydroed for ya.I think its like 28 bucks.But ill have to check.The other one is good till 2010.Thats the only dates that are supposed to be stamped on it.When they test it and it passes,they will use some kind of kickass epoxy and glue a new stamped piece of metal over the old date or near the neck of the bottle.

I know the you can take it to Sparkling Carbonics over on Glendale Milford road.They can do it.Or I can take it to a place that does is over on my side of town.Turn around time is about 3 days.Cintas is the name of that company.

You should be able to talk to any dive shop as well. I believe there close to 15 in the Cincinnati area. If they don't have the equipment to do the hydro test then they can reccomend someone who does.

Sparkling Crabonics is about a 2 week wait.Cintas is about 3 days.They both do it on site.Ive hade about 30 or so cylinders tested over the years.
