My Nieghor is giving me a car. I have a choice from 2 cars. 86 Camero black 6cyl 5spd all it needs is an exhaust. drives good. 76k original miles. or a Black 91 Jetta 5spd 4cyl. not sure on miles. and only problem is the back brakes are locked up. I was wondering if anyone ever owned either one of these cars and do they have common problems? I am leaning towards the Camero. just cuz its a Camero. but the Jetta would be better for winter.

"Camaro" ;)

But seriously, a jetta would be a killer DD, especially for winter.

And once you don't need it anymore, just sell it! :bigthumb

If you want a toy, buy the Camaro and throw a small block in it for dirt cheap.

If you want a DD, Jetta all the way! Can't beat the gas mileage.

Jetta. The rear brakes on the Jetta (if they are disc) are nearly identical to the Mustang's. Might be a parking brake problem if they are locked.

Wouldn't an 86 Camaro still have a carb? Either way the Jetta will get loads better gas mileage and might just be faster.

I always hear about all the Electrical problems that older Jetta's have?

I forgot about that. It's not just the older ones though, they have always been plagued with electrical gremlins. All the way through the 2000s.

I still think it would be a solid DD if gas mileage is a concern.

The Camaro would definitely be more fun. At least it's driving the right wheels. They're also WAY easier to work on than any FWD car and parts are dirt cheap. You can also turn it into a project later if you really want.

my 86 camaro 355 6-speed started life as a 2.8 v6 fuel injected 5-speed even black as well. I drove it to high school everyday. Never had any real issues with it and mine had 176,000 miles on it. From what i remember it got pretty good gas mileage too. It was suprisingly good in the snow too.
Hell if you dont want the camaro ill pitch your neighbor or you a few bucks for it.

For a DD I can't even imagine there'd be a questions about it, it's the Jetta.

I remember driving a Jetta of similar year for work many years ago. It had tons of miles on it. The doors were nearly falling off from being beat on so much, but that damn car ran great!
JETTA!!

The Jetta will be ok until you have to start buying parts for it.
Then all the money you saved in gas goes towards the high price of replacement parts.

I think your mind is already made up here but I have to put in my vote. If this is a DD, no question about it the JETTA by FAR!!!! Maybe biased because I own a jetta, but it has been the best reliable car I've owned. So:

Jetta - :bigthumb

Camero - :flipoff:

Bleah, Volkswagen parts are expensive. If anything serious goes wrong with it, you might as well junk it

yeah, but they have to break first to be expensive, and they almost never break, if you take care of 'em... :D

If you want gas mileage go with the jetta, but if you plan on trying to fix what problems occur yourself you may wish you got the camaro. I work on cars for a living and the site of vw on the lot puts me in a bad mood. Not all things, but most are more exspensive and a bigger headache. Thats just my opinion though!:D
