Anybody mess with genealogy/family tree stuff?

Figured I would check and see if anybody was in to it at all? Just started using Family Tree Maker and mapping out some family history. 24hrs and I have already traced my mom's dad's family line back to Germany in the late 1700's. Anybody else mess around with it, if so how far back have you gone and what are some good resources to use(pref. free)?

I've not really tried much, but will someday. On my fathers side, both grandparents were catholics and had LOTS of kids!

I know the "Tague" clan came from Ireland, went thru Scotland and then into upper New York/Canada. Dug canals along the way into Ohio until settling into SE Ohio, mainly Crooksville OH where the started mining coal.

There is an American Legion post in New Lexington Ohio named after a relative who died in WWI and is buried in Belgium.


Looking for information about and relatives of World War 1 soldier John Tague. He was from New Lexington, Perry county and is buried in Flanders Field Cemetery in Belgium. He was died of wounds October 31, 1918 – eleven days before the end of the war. Perhaps a Roll of Honor book of the county was made ?? The American Legion Post of New Lexington is called after him, but they have no information.

Both my grandparents on my dads side are buried in New Lex. I believe the people in Perry County that do the research on geneology are in Junction City.

That's nuts! I wouldn't have the patience, or the resources to trace mine back that far (nor the desire to).

I'm currently in a Family Communication class at school and earlier this semester, we had to create a "genogram." If you are not familiar, it's very similar to a family tree except it's mainly supposed to mainly depict family relationships and/or repeated patterns, as well as show your genealogy. It can also be used for therapy or to display a family's medical history as well.

Anyway, for the project, we had to create a genogram going back 3 generations, then write a 8 page paper about our observations on the relationships and patterns. The software I used was called "Genopro"... and it was extremely advanced and near impossible to figure everything out! You can go to their website and download a ten day trial, I believe, which will give you access to all the options. You can make your genogram/family tree as simple or as complex as you'd like, and there are a billion details you can add, if you desire. I hardly know any of my family and everyone is distant, so it was very difficult to do. But it would be cool to do if you are able to find out information and whatnot, and know about your family's roots.

Ancestry.com has actual copies of census reports, military id cards, etc. I printed them out when they were free. I got as far back as 1892! All the information is up to date as when I was researching Jason's family history, his aunt had died about 6 months prior and her information was in there correctly. The thing with this website is to go there around holidays. That is when you can print everything out for FREE! I like this website because it links you to others who have the name you are researching in other family trees. Most of the time they are your LONG distant relatives and it will let you email the person!

Vinny's family has a webpage there. I get on there about once a week. It's a good thing, they have everybody's addresses, emails, and you can post pictures. Good way to keep in touch.

Yeah, I have seen that (myfamily.com)!! One of my co-workers' families has one I think. They have their own page w/ all contact info, etc. and she is on there all the time. Is it free to create an account?

I'm not sure, I think it might be. You have to be invited to join the family's page (whoever started it) though, not just anybody can join, which is cool. Easy access to emails and stuff.

I was able to meet on of my relatives thru trading info online, she happened to be 5-6 streets away from my buddy in Taylor MI. We had the same great grand father.

When my uncle was doing this stuff it was a free account, but then they tried to get you to buy a gold membership for more features, IIRC.

Never go looking for something unless you are not afraid of what you may find!
