Isn't it just as simple as drilling/tapping the intake valley for the spider bolts and then using a roller cam/lifters/dogbones?

You have to get a retrofit cam and lifters. The problem is that the lift bores aren't tall enough for roller lifters, so to compensate they make the lobes of the cam smaller. Then you drill and tap for the spider. The problem is you're limited on how much cam you can have with this setup because there comes a point where you run out of room for lift. Personally i'm just holding out until i find a roller 351.

Jesse, you should have mentioned this when you were up Saturday. You drill and tap the holes for the spyder, but they are over the cam bearings, so it is a tricky deal that should be done without the cam bearings in. The lifters can be stock ones when you use a retro small base circle camshaft. The easiest way is to use the retro lifters from Crane, I have some sets of those at the shop you can check out to see what they are. Then you can use any 302 HO roller cam with the early windsor block. Hope this helps.

Don't get a retro cam....you are very limited to what you can get. Go the route I did, it's more expensive but you are unlimited as to cam choices since a regular cam will run it. Get the retro-fit roller rockers from Crane....Craig can get them.

Is this the part number?

Ford Racing
397-M-6500-S58

If that's the case... I'll stick with flat tappet for that price!

Retro fit rockers or lifters? How would different rockers make a difference?

I think he meant lifters...

Either way, those fuggers are expensive! I'll slap that thing back together with the flat tappet shit if I have to...

Now I cant decide if I want to use my explorer motor, or rebuild the 351 and put the P heads on it... and find a lightning lower...

Yeah, they're pretty proud of them. I got my set used, but have built several engines using new sets. Kind of hard to swallow at first, but once you have them you'll wonder how you did without.

In your experience Mike, How much horsepower is freed up by going with the roller setup?

I use the tie bar hydraulic roller lifters in my 351w based engine. They've gone through two engines already and still good. I bout mine from FMS about 3 years ago and they were $370, and the Cranes were $450 at the time.
