View Full Version : Recomend me a handgun for carrying

I'm very new to guns. I'm going to be getting my CCW's on August 23rd and would like to start researching handguns and pick one up before my class. What are things I should look for when shopping for a handgun? A buddy of mine just picked up a Ruger SR9 and I really like it.
I haven't shot many guns outside of the Army, but I have shot my Dad's S&W .357 many times, this past 4th of July being the most recent. I have no idea what model it is though. Just looking for some guidance.

Go to a range that rents them and try out a few.. People will be able to suggest different ones, But it will come down to what is most comfortable for you..
It's kind of like the Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge thing, Some people like 1 more then the other, But what is good and fitting for me may not suit you.. Just my .02

A few questions.
How are you going to carry, how much do you want to spend and do you want an auto or a revolver?
It all comes down to personal opinions really and the best way is to go to the range and find what you like. You can heed the advice of others but make sure to try it out first before you buy. Because what some may like others may hate.
For instance I carry a Glock and I hate it (i have no choice) but others love it.
In my personal Opinion the greatest everyday carry set up is an:
HK P7M8 in a Milt Sparks Versa Max II in the waistband holster.
http://www.miltsparks.com/images/Photos/VM-2_large.jpg
That would be the setup in the black holster.
There are two draw backs to this set up.
The first being the P7M8s run about $1300 used. Which is generally more than folks want to spend and Second when I check about 2 weeks ago Milt Sparks was backlogged 26-28 weeks on their holsters.
The Most viable option would be a Sig 229 chambered in .357 Sig in a TT Gun Leather Slim IWB or Blade Tech UCH In the waistband holster

Sweet, Targetworld has rentals for $6 per gun, then it's $9 per half hour or $14 for an hour, and you obviously pay for the rounds. I'm gonna head up there tonight if they're still open. Thanks guys!

TW does rent them but if you can find someone who has a gun your interested that you can try you will likely get a better impression. I don't think TW's guns get a lot of up-keep.
Most recetly I bought a S&W M&P Compact in .40SW. I have had it to the range a few times and I like it. I do want something lighter though and may end up picking up a S&W airweight revolver sometime in the near future. I also like the feel of the Tarus Millenium Pro's but I have never had the chance to shoot one.

Good advice
Other factors are how you dress, do you wear bulky clothes that make it easier to conceal a medium sized weapon, or tight clothes that would require a smaller sized/capacity weapon. Also what accessories are available, shoulder holster, hip holster, ankle holster, or back pocket( there are neat back pocket holsters that protect the trigger and disguise the bulge). Also what safety features you like, what caliber, capacity. Put alot of thought and research into your decision.:AR15:

I have a Taurus PT140 and will be perfect for when I become of age to CC.
It is a subcompact and is perfect for CCW. If you won't shoot me, I wouldn't have a problem letting you shoot it at TW.
It's a .40 cal which is a great round over all and the mag holds 9 rounds which is incredible. Here is a picture of a PT140, unfortunately the picture does not have any thing to help you reference size. It is SMALL. http://dealerease.net/catalog/images/taurpic1140039p.jpg

I'm a big guy with big hands, and I hate the subcompact glocks. I don't really care for a glock at all, but the subcompact glocks like the 27 are just doesn't work well for me. I'm surprised more haven't mentioned Kimber. I love the Ultra Ten II.

glock 19 here. a bit big to be a ccw arm but it fits me well. not to mention that i have abused mine enough to know that it will perform when needed. i profile a bit with it during the summer months. but i have never had a problem. something to consider is not only what firearm to carry but what holster to use. i have tons of them because i had some difficulty finding one that i liked. i ended up with a galco leather with a very forward cant to it and i carry strong side for now.

I picked up my M&P for $399 which I thought was a pretty good deal. I would have a hard time carrying something like the Kimber just because I am not comfortable carrying cocked & locked.

how many times have you shot them???
Being a squeeze cocker it takes awhile to get used to it. I wasn't a big fan at first but once you get used to it they are amazing.
If you max is $500. I highly suggest you look into the S&W M&P or as Timido suggested. The P6.
http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Sig_Sauer_P225_P6_9mm_Pistol.html
For $269. You can't beat it. It will probably have some holster wear but send it off to CCR to be refinished and put in a new recoil spring and for under $400 you will have a hell of a carry piece. It's only down fall being single stack.

Hmmm. IN Ohio one must be 21 to posses a handgun the same age to apply for a Concealed Carry Permit:confused:
As for Taurus I would only own their revolvers. Have read to many complaints about their Autos to rely on it for defense. Have shot a few and they were alright but I have heard too many stories to think about it as my defense gun.
But as I said before Firearms are all about personal opinions and one needs to pick what is best for them.

Hands down the best (My opinion) packing hand guns out there. They are pricey but you get quality and relability, large caliber, in a compact.

For a decent carry pistol, at a decent price, try these:
Ruger LCP .380
http://tinyurl.com/424378
Ruger 9mm Polymer
http://tinyurl.com/6zur2f
This is my carry pistol. http://www.kahr.com/PA-1_40sw_pm.html
I had a Glock 27. It was a great pistol, but much too big for me to carry. The Kahr PM40 is the same caliber, is one inch shorter, and 0.25" thinner. Those dimensions make a huge difference!
Another great option, that Timido already mentioned, is the Sig P6 (P225). It is aluminum and a single stack 9mm. People of all sizes like that pistol.
For winter carry, I use a HK USP Compact .40. It rides in a Galco holster.
The P7M8 is the Rolls Royce of pistols. It is thin and user friendly. Unfortunately it is expensive and heavy. The get hot after firing a couple of magazines through them, but that will never be a factor for CCW.
These people are serious about HK's:

I carry a kimber pro-carry II .45 ACP. When I bought it nearly 5 years ago I was of the mindset that I had to carry a large caliber. While the gun is extremely acurate and dependable and fairly easily concealed in jeans and a t-shirt, I'm considering going to an air weight .38+P wheel gun for a couple of reasons.
1. Ease of carry. I don't alway like to lug around the kimber and a light weight revolver could easily be thrown in the pocket of whatever I am wearing.
2. Looking at the ballisitics of the newer .38+P rounds I feel confident in their knock down power.
3. .38 caliber is commonly seen as a self defense round. Which may look better in court(god forbid) than hollow point .45's.
4. Wheel guns are some of the most reliable guns out there. Which is important in self defense.
The only real draw back I see is only 5 rounds vs 8 I have now.
I would say that when purchasing a gun to carry, make sure it's something that you will carry. If it's too large/heavy you may get tired of carrying it around. A gun is no good if you don't have it with you. Also I wouldn't get hung up too much on the caliber of handgun. Get a good self defense round that will work as advertised when fired from your gun. The most important thing is rounds on target. If you can't hit them it won't matter what you're carrying.

Well being the gun nut I am I have to chime in on this. I have had my permit in Ky for 5-6 years now. When I delivered pizza a few nights a week, I carried every time. My set up is not spectacular or exotic or expensive. I have an uncle mike's leather in the waistband holster that I clip on my right side just behind my pocket but before my back pocket. I had to get in and out of my truck/car many times and felt this was most comfortable. I have carried a few handguns over the years. Had a Beretta 9mm full size, way too big for CCW. Had a Kel tec 9mm for a while but it felt like a toy. Too small. Now my carry gun is a Taurus Milinnium PT 145. It is compact, holds 10 plus one, single action only so you have the long trigger pull every time, and it is chambered in the .45 acp. There are a ton of rounds out there for self defense. I carry with winchester silver tip hollow points. If you clean your pistol everytime you shoot it, and oil it properly, alot of the horror stories you hear about jams and such can be avoided.
The main thing is to be comfortable with what ever you are carrying. Practice practice practice and pray you never have to pull it but if you have to, be ready to pull the trigger till the bad guy is dead. No shooting to wound.

If Decker carries a PT, then it has to be reliable.
The only thing I don't like about mine is the way the trigger works. It's the only gun I have ever shot where the trigger has a full pull regardless if a round is chambered or not.

I have heard both good and bad about the reliability of the Taurus semi-autos. I mever had a problem with the PT92 I use to have. I think the early Millenium series guns had some quality control issues that gave them a bad rap. I would recommend that put a few hundred rounds through it at the range so that you are comfortable with it and know that is reliable.

I carry a Smith and Wesson SW99 Compact. I have the 9mm version, it holds 10 in the mag, +1 chambered. I've put a ton of rounds through it (~5000), and I've never had a misfire or jam. Its been extremely reliable and would easily trust my life with it.
A friend of mine is a Cincy Cop, and I've checked out his M&P and would really like to have the compact version of that gun. Maybe in a 40 cal this time.
If you would like to shoot my gun anytime let me know, I'm always down for some shooting range action.

I usually confine my carrying usage to these 4 handguns. The main reason is to keep carrying wear and tear confined to just a few handguns. I mostly carry the Glock 36 (.45ACP), but the Taurus PT111(9mm) is primarily used as a back up. The Ruger P345 (.45ACP) is a good handgun, but it is heavy, and the Kimber Ultra Carry in Aluminum frame is what I carry when I'm all gussied up! :D I have had ZERO issues with these handguns, and have put large amounts of ammo through these. Like everyone else has said, carry what YOU like, what feels best, and what has been proven reliable. Opinions will vary wildly. There are some folks that carry airweight revolvers, and others that carry Desert Eagle .50's (why someone would carry that anvil is beyond me, but it's their right.).

This picture shows how small the Kahr PM40 really is. FYI, these are all single stacks. The P7M8 weighs 28 oz., the P225 weighs 26 oz., the PM40 weighs 14 oz.! :) Obviously, recoil will become an issue for some with the PM40. It's not fun to shoot, but it is more likely to be carried than the other two simply because it is lightweight.

The Pt-92 was made on old beretta machines. I along with Dekker and fond of my firearms and i spend alot of time in a few different gun stores. One that i go to often is Hunters den in Amelia. He will not order any taurus semi autos any more. He has to send back 3 of every 4 he gets. There repair time it not so good also. I have a Ultra lite stainless 38 special that i carry often and i have not had any prolbems with it. I have had it for 3 years.
Just make sure of one thing. Do not buy from target world without checking around. There is a few gun stores that i like. Hunters Den, Shooters supply, Old milford, and One shot. I have bought alot of guns from all but one shot. they seem nice though. That is where i am going for my class III stuff next.
I like my glocks but i shoot a single stack (1911) alot better, so i am looking for one next after i pick up another ar-15 or 2. I already have 2 but they want a couple of more brothers.
Good luck in you search.

Went last night and had a blast! Shot a Ruger SR9, some kind of .357 Ruger Revolver, Glock 27, and theyallslow's shotgun. That thing was crazy haha. I loved the SR9. The glock was dead nuts accurate for me, but the gun itself just felt really cheap. Wasn't a fan of the Ruger revolver because of the amount of pressure it took to squeeze the trigger. It was throwing my shot off everytime because of it.
I spent about 45 minutes looking at their handguns and I loved the Springfield XD40 sub compact 3" bi tone. I really like how it feels in my hand and I'm hoping I can find one to shoot soon. Depending on how it shoots, this is my number 1 choice as of now.

The smaller and lighter, the more comfortable to carry, and the more likely it will be.
Latest issue or the NRA magazine American Rifleman has a write up on
a nice little new Ruger semi-auto model LCP chambered for .380 ACP.
Close in size to the Walther PPK but much lighter at 12 ozs. fully loaded.
Magazine article list the MSRP at $330.
May be able to find the American Rifleman mag / article online.

I used to carry a North American Arms .17HMR revolver...very small and not good accuracy past 5 -8 feet. Now I carry a Smith & Wesson 637 .38SPL+P (j-frame). Its accurate, plenty of aftermarket stuff available and big enough in size to send out a warning! Im big on carrying revolvers due to my dad's .32ACP automatic jamming because of a faulty clip. Also my Glock 19 jammed due to two primers falling out of casings into the gun body(extremely cheap ammunition though...just using it to get rid of...don't buy any ammunition thats in a red box marked "CHINA"!). Good luck!

In a for sale thread on CSS about guns, you post several times and end up buying it. Then you pester me about deleting you posts so people won't know you have a gun, to which I say no, if you didn't want people to konw you have a gun you should have not posted it on a public forum, and think about your actions before you take them. You blow up like a little girl, and act like a faggot. Then.............I read this thread and you're posting like your a sharpshooter gunsmith. Of course all this occured in a week. The instructor in my CCW class brought along a box filled with all different types of holsters. He said to stick with leather, the rest were crap. But it was very informative to see and touch all of them, see where they were best placed. Especially with different body types.
Guys with thinner frames and no pot belly can carry bigger guns more comfortably than a guy with a gut. Although the gut/backfat conceals nicely, it isn't very comfy to have a piece of metal shoved in it!
I carry a Bersa 380. My husband carries a Taurus PT-92. Big, but he likes it. My PT-92 is in my nightstand. We also have a S&W 9mm, several rifles/shotguns, and an antique revolver.

As most of you that know me and I know Decker will agree I know my fair share about firearms, weapons and other things that fall into this area, In Kansas we do not have CCW yet.
But to add my 2 cents in this post I would like to suggest the next sub-compact I will own, it's not the cheapest and it's not for everyone but I like it and I know what works for me.
I would suggest that you look into a Springfield XD Sub-compact 3" 45ACP. I am including the link to their site so you can get all the details on it.
The Springfield Armory "XD SUB-COMPACT 3" (http://www.springfield-armory.com/xd.php?model=2)
My advice to you is get something you like and will enjoy, that fits your needs. It's better to have to explain your actions to a judge in a court case then to have someone identifying you. Remember once you pull the trigger that bullet isn't coming back, always make sure you know what you're going to shoot before you pull the trigger.
Words to live by when you own a weapon...
Practice practice practice and pray you never have to pull it but if you have to, be ready to pull the trigger till the bad guy is dead. No shooting to wound.

He said to stick with leather, the rest were crap.
I find it sad when instructors of all people voice comments like this that are nothing more than a personal opinion. Especially in intro classes where most people are probably still new to the sport.
Kydex is a great holster material especially for the summer months.
Leather against the body makes one sweat terribly.
There are lots of good kydex holsters out there and there are bad ones too. But guess what there are bad leather holsters as well.
Again it all comes down to personal opinion.

Well said. An instructor should never give a blanket statement like that. Especially when it is an opinion not fact.
My leather in the waist band holster does make me sweat a little. Buy it is light, allows easy draw, and fits me. Will it fit someone else just as well, maybe not. The decision to carry a firearm carries with it alot of responsibility. Be safe.

I have carried many different types of guns. My first was the Kel-tec P3AT. I loved the size (tiny) and that it was still a .380 at least. BUT that gun jammed at the range way too much for my comfort. I work in the hood and may actually have to use it. So I sold it. (they have since redesigned the ejector) In the winter I like to carry my Ruger P345 at times. It's a great gun. But all in all my S&W is by far the "smartest" thing that I carry. It's a .38 special +p 5 shot snub nose with internal hammer. (no snagging on pocket) A no frills revolver is the way to go IMO. When your life counts on it you need a reliable gun. You may run into a situation where the time it takes you to rack a semi will be too long.

I am not a fan of the Israeli or Mossad Draw (not keeping one in the chamber)
Though with practice one can draw and rack just as fast as some can draw regular.
I have no problem keeping one in the chamber. I wouldn't carry in anything that didn't block the trigger anyway so it's not a concern.

I recommend a Springfield Armory XD40 Sub Compact. Why? Most LEO's are carrying .40S&W's now, they are a good all multipurpose round, a lot of people don't care for the caliber, but I like mine. As accurate as any handgun that I have shot, more reliable than 99.999% of the handguns out there, and safer than anything except for a gun with no bullets.
Though with practice one can draw and rack just as fast as some can draw regular.
Yes, BUT, there is ALWAYS the chance that you miss the slide, your racking arm/hand is injured, or some other variable that is not there with one in the chamber. It is one other thing that can go wrong while under stress.

You would not want to keep one chambered with the PT140. The trigger is way to light IMO.
PT140 has a 9 lb trigger pull. If you think that's light you need to shoot some competition 1911s that are as low as 2 lbs.
My Glock has an 8lb pull upped from the factory 5lb.
IMO an unloaded gun is equal to a brick. All my firearms have 1 in the chamber at all times.

I guess my thing behind it, espcially when its sitting here in my room as a "home defense" gun, that it chambering a round gives me an extra .5 second to think about what is going on. IE: So I don't inadvertently shoot someone who has walked in to the wrong apartment innocently, etc.
cstreu1026

And it gives a would-be criminal half a second more to try and harm you. There is no accidentally entering my house by mistake. If I don't invite you in you might just get greeted my the barrel of my 1911 or Remington 870.

Paul, also if someone BEATS you to your gun, most of the time the dumb criminal will just pull the trigger on an empty chamber, giving you 1-3 seconds to try to overpower them when they go......WTF!
No matter the issue, racking the slide on any semi-auto won't effect the outcome very much. If you think about it, it is the same training as treating ever gun as loaded. In a "pressure" situation treat the semi-auto as UNCHAMBER and rack the slide.
Now those that carry 1911 style will differ, but their guns IMHO are better suited for carrying one in the tube.
Home defense gun, if I feel the need to pullm it out of the holster, I rack it no matter if I know one is up the tube.
Paul you soon learn that the .5 sec you think to chamber the round does give you time to THINK about WTF is going on.
Then again you underage possesor, I doubt you have felt the RUSH and tunnel vision of drawing down on a HUMAN with intent to double tap.
It ain't pretty once you've done it and look back.
The sad part if something would have happened at that event in 1994..........I never racked the slide to chamber a round.
Wanna so OH FUCK! moment looknig back, I did it.

One reason I like double actions and Double singles. My P6 has a real heavy double action I think it is 24lbs. You have to want to make that trigger pull. I dont know how comfortable I would be carrying a cocked and locked 1911.

There are pro's and con's to carrying chambered or not, and can be debated until the Liberals take the guns away. It's a personal decision that YOU must make for yourself, and not let others opinions sway you. Do what you feel most comfortable with, and as your experience and skills improve, you may decide to change how you carry.

This is why trigger discipline is so very very important and your finger is never on the trigger until you are ready to fire. Not if you think you are ready to fire.

Yup. I won't tell people how to carry I just tell them how I carry and why. Like I stated before an unloaded firearm is nothing more than a brick in my opinion.
I keep all my guns with a chambered round, except for a 12 gauge or two because the initial sound of it racking is a great deterrent.
But all the rest are kept in a safe fashion best suited for that gun to keep it from going off.
Some of my firearms have safeties and they are activated. Those that don't have safeties are kept in a holster or case where as the trigger is covered.
Safety is very important but keeping one in the chamber is far from a saefty risk in my opinion.
But it is different strokes for different folks and their comfort level and use of the firearms.
Granted I am in a different position than most that I do draw my weapon generally multiple times a week.

If you don't trust your gun, or yourself enough to carry your gun chambered, you don't need it.

Hi
Open carry is a right in Ohio, but just be aware that you can get hassled. Do you read OFCC?? There are 2 cases on there of harassment of Open Carry people, one in Willowick and one in Northwood Ohio. I am not saying don't O/C, just be aware of what can happen. Apparently the Northwood Police Chief believes that O/C is against the law. Personally I am buying a recorder to carry with me.... paranoid.... well maybe!! I don't think all the officers are totally aware of the O/C laws, or there are a few that just enjoy harassing people.

It's mostly some of them enjoy harassing others, not something the good old Hamilton PD is above. And yes, I've been around OFCC forums for some time. I'm aware of Willowick and Northwood, and it's nearly hilarious in both cases, it was all started by a panicked off duty cop.
Anyway, I've open carried before, not new to it, just wanting a more suitable holster.

You should shove that popcorn in your mouth and learn to stfu more often. You're "top-notch" standing being a damn know-it-all on countless car forums really doesn't mean shit.... get over it already.
For what it's worth, countless people disagree with you, that inducing panic is a valid charge. Read the law!
I've also taken the advice of my CCW instructor and countless others at OFCC and consulted with my lawyer. It cost a bit of money, but well worth it to get a lawyers opinion on having to use deadly force for self defense. We also talked about open carry, he doesn't agree with you.
But shit, what does he know eh? Clearly I should take my advice from a guy that pics up dogshit for a living and delivers it to a lab, over a guy with like.... a degree, a bar license, and trial law experience....... Maybe I should give a retainer to you, so you can defend me if the need ever arises?
