I see both sides- a old school lamp is only about 2% efficient. The rest is given off as heat. It sucks in the summer, but it's not a problem in the winter.

CFLs are slow to start up, sometimes will not come on at all in cold weather, and nearly all cannot be dimmed.

The whole mercury thing the Rep mentioned is a bit overblown. I can't remember the last light bulb I broke. Also, all normal flourescents are exactly the same, if not worse since they are so much bigger. The mercury levels drop as the lamp gets used too, so if you break it after it burns out, it's not such a big deal. Break it when it's new, yea it's not the healthiest thing in the world.

Australia has already banned incandescents BTW. If this thing does happen, I'm going to buy $100 worth of lamps before they are banned. There could be a huge black market for light bulbs, crazy...

Well folks it boils down to this. The Democrats are all about big Gov. they want to be involved in every aspect of your life. More or less they want to run your life for you.
