Ok so here's the thing

I want to do something special for my Dad this year. I found out he had a small heart attack and I have been thinking about it ever since. My father and I have always had a relationship, never too emotional, but the bond is there.

He is giving me away in two weeks, and father's day is two weeks after that so I wanted to do something grand for him.

but here's the things...he doesn't like to do much.

He doesn't like the movies....He has bad blood pressure and cholesterol...so some huge steakhouse is out of the question...don't want to cause much more damage....

Not a golfing type of guy....

My parents have everything they need; plus I don't just want to buy something and say "here ya go Happy Fathers day I love you"....

I am just stumped at what to do....

I actually want to go out and do something with him...

I am stressing myself out over this...

So tell me Daddy's out there...what is something you would like to do with your Baby Girl?

Write him a Heartfelt letter explaining to him what he means to you!!
It will mean more to him then anything you can buy or do for him.. A father wants nothing more then to know that they did the best they could for his children.. It'll be something he'll cherish forever and tell all of his friends about!!!!

A drag race day would be cool. I would enjoy it if my daughter invited me. It would be special.

If you can find something special that he loves to do but hasn't in a while, that is a good idea (like the drag racing). If nothing else, take him a nice card, go to his home with all the goodies and fix him dinner, then sit around and go through old photo albums together.

Sometime the best times together are simply just a quiet afternoon of talking.

One of my greatest moments with my grandfather before he passed - one afternoon I called him up took him out to a pay lake a we went fishing (he used to take me all the time when I was a wee one) - we sat around ate burgers, drank beer and just shot the bull. After a couple of hours we decided we ought to at least bait a hook and cast to make it official. I will remeber that day for the rest of my life.

:agree:

What he said! That would mean more to a father than any material item!

Find an old picture he took of you, and have him tell you what was going on that day, what kind of little girl you were, the cute mannerisms you exhibated when you were small. Hug him, and tell him how he shaped your character to make you who you are today.
Then ask him if he would join you on a trip to a favorite place you both went together to that made him happy.

Get a professional picture with him. I've had mine gone for 9 years now and I wish I had at least one professional pic with him.

What are his hobbies? His likes and interests? Perhaps he has a train hobby, take him on a dinner train tour. They are pricey, but worth a ton in terms of good quality time together.

Maybe he likes theatre and mystery novels. Take him on a mystery train cruise. Or to Playhouse in the Park.

Does he like water and/or boats? Perhaps a river cruise. A boat show.

Maybe he likes guns and ammo, take him to a turkey shoot. Present him with a new gun to take along. (Find out what he wants first).

Ask your Mom about whAT HIS DREAMS were long ago. Perhaps you can renew an old interest.

If none of these apply, get him invloved in YOUR hobby. As mentioned above, bring him to an event, a race, a track day, something he would enjoy. If it deals with his beloved daughter (YOU) then it will be good time spent. And something he can treasure, especially if you give him a trip down the track in your car. Hand him the wheel.

Maybe he has a bourbon fetish, take him on a tour of Kentuckies Makers Mark factory, or the Jim Beam factory.

Camping? Pack up a tent and your toiletries and make the best of it.

Cave touring? There are tons of caves locally to explore.

Driving? Perhaps a professional driving class would be in order.

Mountains? Hiking? Gatlinburg is great, as would be Red River Gourge.

Travel? Can you say ROAD TRIP!!!???!!!! Awesome quality time you both would treasure forever.

Tools? Ahhh, a simple trip to Sears....

Home improvement? Help out with a hefty project that would allow you to work together.

Just use your imagination.

Gadgets? My Dad just HAD to have a GPS after we visited him with our Garmin in tow. Just make sure you are familiar with what you give him or can teach him how to use what you buy for him. Go on a short trip to show him what it can do.

Just use your imagination. I feel your pain. My Dad has EVERYTHING! And the cash to buy whatever he doesn't have. The key is to make memories with whatever it is you decide to do. That, he CAN'T buy....

Last year for Fathers Day my wife made me a video of our 2 little girls. She is always taking pictures everywhere we go. So she got a bunch of good ones together of me spending time with my girls. My wife put them on the computer and added a song to it. It broke my heart and I started tearing up. That is probably the best gift I could ever receive. Maybe try something like that. Find a bunch of baby pics of you (and siblings if you have any) and then just go from year to year until the most recent. Then pick out some good music that would go with the pics...:bigthumb

Just getting some time to share with my little girl is all I ever want. Take some time for just you and him, and follow most of the advice given in this thread, very good advice.
