Anybody know anything about DVD players and formats????

I am looking to buy an old movie made in Australia, and NOBODY reproduces this movie that I know of, and the format used on the DVD is the PAL format, which if I am correct is also the same thing as the REGION 4 format (United States and Japan use NTSC format), anyway, I really want this movie and I am curious... are most DVD players today Mulit-regional? and Multi-format? Also what formats do Playstation 2's read?

Hmmm...

I know you can switch PS2's and even some DVD players over to OUTPUT PAL format.....
....But I don't know if NTSC or PAL is encoded on to the DVD

I bet our few home video experts will be able to set us straight.

How does one switch the formatting on such devices? If that is the case I think the problem is mostly solved... I think...

I'll have to talk to my dad, he picked up a region free upconverting DVD player for like $100 BUT I believe I have a cheap Cyberhome DVD player that will play all formats also. Paid like $30 for it. Usually your DVD players are tied down to their specific region, especially your nicer brands. I know my Sony DVD player, Toshiba HD player and Toshiba HD DVD Recorder all are region specific and won't play a movie from New Zealand but the Cyberhome will. Also there are local companies that will convert the disk for you. Now if it's copyrighted, that may be an issue. Not sure?

Aj, do you know if a PS2 can be switched? My PS2 is my primary DVD player, as I do not have room for a DVD player AND a game console...The movie I am looking to buy is called "The Chain Reaction" made right after Mad Max, but apparently only released Down Under

To play them on a PS2 you will have to get a mod chip that has the option for region free playing. (though a new region free DVD player is about the same price)

Your best bet is to go with one of the Code Free DVD players.
PS2 Slim mod chips don't have as many options.

Get yourself a new DVD player. You'll gain the ability to play it and better functionality.
PS2 DVD playback and audio codecs are very outdated.

That's part of it. The are also different break downs within NTSC and PAL.
