In my line of work, I drive hundreds of miles each day in my daily grind:
A 1999 Grand Prix 3.1L V6 Automatic
I get reimbursed 31 cents for every mile I drive. You say to your self well almost a buck per 3 miles does not sound bad.....well its not haha, but that also goes towards tires, oil changes, etc.
Any ways, to improve my profit per mile, I needed to extend gas mileage.
This may sound basic and "duh" but the results speak for them selves.
I am getting 35.7 mpg out of a V6 with 191xxx by never letting the engine rev higher than 2500rpm. I drive 62 on the high way, accelerate like a napping grandma, and stop as little as possible (which means I'm getting REAL good at timing yellow lights)
Moral of the story- I am getting a real world calculated result of 35.7 mpg out of a V6 3.1
Thats pretty damn good in my book. Thoughts?

I guess I must be missing the part that isn't common sense?

The part where it says:
36 mpg out of a 9 year old 6 cylinder.

Only 31 cents per mile? That kind of sucks. My company pays 50.5 cents.
Any way thats a pretty solid way to gain mileage as long as you can tolerate being that guy. Slow and steady wins the race.

That is sweet. I am not patient enough to drive that smoothly.

Wow 50 cents, I'd be buying a 3rd Mustang if that was the case haha.
Is your 50 cent mile also tax free like mine? And, is your hourly wage appropriate for your skill set / job title...IE: If you didn't get paid mileage, would you still make enough? Or is your job , a "driving job"?

Why would one buy it when MY combo gets 53 mpg on a D15B7 Honda?
102 CHP from the factory, yet I wrenched out 121.2 WHP (145 CHP) in 2005?
You laughed then, you might laugh now, you won't laugh at your mext fill up.
I'm not here to brag about MY Honda and what I found to work for me, but look back at the OLD HF CRX's that were getting 50 mpg.......in 1985/1986 for chirsts sake!
20+ years ago cars with CARBS were getting better gas mileage than we are today.
+25-30 whp from stock, +50% mpg.......Thanks Smokey Yunick :)

I get 44 cents a mile and I work for a non profit, and its tax free. Anyway those are good number out of an engine that old.

No taxes taken out of mine either. 50.5 cents is the standard rate the government pays as well. When I started with the company 3 years ago it was 37.5. I don't have a driving drop either. The only time I see mileage payout is the spring, summer, and fall when I volunteer to work household hazardous waste collection events. They pay me mileage since I have to drive my own vehicle to the middle of no where, ohio.

Careful driving it like a grandma all the time, it tends to carbon stuff up like IAC.

There is a fine line between this actually working and it working against you. For example, if you try this with a Mustang that has a 2.73 gear, you're going to lug the engine and it's gonna burn more fuel as it works harder to make the torque to move the car with such a low gear. I find that under or at about 2500 works well for me too but my Merkur has 3.65 gears in it.
How are you doing this with an automatic?

I knew a guy growing up who had a '70 Challenger that ran like a turd because it never got opened up. I would've loved to see what the valves looked like on those heads.

A lot of companies try to stay with the Federal Govt. milage cost. Mine does. I believe I get .505 as well.

I'm not sure what you mean? I just keep my foot out the throttle.
Also, I mistyped.
I keep it under 2100 rpm at all times. Seriously!

Same with me....we use the Federal rates for meals when out of town and IRS rates for mileage.
I couldn't get 36 mpg by doubling either of my rides (Jeep and Cobra each get about 16 mpg with normal driving....Cobra can get a lot worse though. :D )
