Where did the phrase " the whole nine yards " come from? I know. Do you?

A cement truck holds 9 yards....

Something to do with that?

nope that has been disproven, in the 60's the cement trucks went from 4.5 cubic yards to about 6.5 cubic yards.

THREE other possible explanations.

1) (DECKERS) machine gun belt of ammo used to be 27 feet long, aka 9 yards :)

2) Scottish kilts used 9 yards of fabric

3) (most likely) Three mast sailing ships with three yardarms a piece, a total of nine yardarms :)

I heard the first one, pilots would say "I gave it the whole nine yards". It was on the history channel once. Tv = pure facts.

It was adapted during the dawn of the machine gun days...but originally (to my understanding) it came from the days of the sailing vessel when you set sail at full speed (full sail with all three main sails) - Mista is right - 9 yard arms. Sailing (and thus the saying) was around a lot longer than the machine gun.

Arrrggg...hoist yer main sail...givve 'er the whole nine yards matey!

(Of course there is another theory of some overly endowed porn star....)
