is there any trick to getting 302 water pump to seal good? used new gasket and it pours out of the two unused holes.on the back of the timing cover

Did you replace both gaskets?

There is one between the pump and backing plate, and one between the plate and the timing cover.

yeah and it was pouring out of the unused bolt hole of the timing cover.like a water hose was there?

this is got to be the hardest water pump to get to seal,ive ever done in my life

I always just use RTV with no issues. Just let it setup for 24 hours.

i did just use rtv and leaked like it had water hoses next to it im stumped

sure you have the right pump?

Did you lay a bead of RTV on the pump and let it tack up for like 30 minutes or so?

Those holes require long bolts than run into the block

you have the wrong water pump

those holes do not go through to the the block. i think your problem is the timing cover is warped in that spot. because the water pump gasket should cover those holes in your application, and the water pump doesnt have holes in it any way. any local machine shop with a belt sander or mill can fix this problem for you. and you can also fill the holes with weld or plugs fo extra security.

funny thing is it didnt leak when i took it off to put in cam?

He is right I didnt even notice you had extra holes :lol: I think I may have an extra timing cover somewhere

You might have a non roller block timing chain,im not sure.If you cant find one or 89NOTCH doesnt have one,i got one floating around some where at my dads house.Let me know.

well got it back together after the third time!and it isnt leaking.ran it thru 3 or 4 heat cycles.and not leak so far

i got the timing chain for a 88 stang or 89 stang the motor is out of a 89
