There was some surface rust in a few corners and so I sandblasted the back half with a little portable blaster. I was trying to contain the sand so as not to make a mess all over the entire garage. It didnt work out to bad.

I hear ya. That shit gets everywhere!
I bet I could hit my car with a blow gun today and still get sand out of some dark places.
The worst part is how the sand gets everywhere on you. I still dont understand how it gets down your pants.
post some pics of the cage! :bigthumb

It definitely made a mess and I spent 2 days cleaning up the garage afterwards. The car is really clean and the brown area you see underneath towards the front is actually the dust from sandblasting. The car originally was a 4cyl and came from Pennsylvania a few years ago. I had another coupe torn down about like this one but sold it when I came across this one. I'll post some pics of the cage within the next few days.

Car is looking good. That rubber sound deadening is a pain to remove. Keep posting pics so we can all watch you progress. Maybe some of us that are building cars will get some ideas for our projects.

I scraped forever with a heat gun on the sound deadner. I'll post more pics as I go along and I'm always looking at others projects too for ideas and also direction. It seems to be taking forever at this point but I'll get it done eventually.

Cool project! I am about to start on a similar project, 4 cyl conversion, cage, etc. I will be watching your progress, like what I see so far, for sure.
You will be surprised if you weigh that sound deadener you are removing. I couldn't believe it when I did!

It seems to be going slow but the cage will be done this week. I'll post some more pics this week. I'm going to have the car soda blasted and then I'll get busy on the paint. I have almost everything I need to put it together except for time! The sound deadner definitely makes a weight difference. I used a heat gun to warm things up to make it scrape off easier. Still a lot of work though.

I bought the cage from Summitt racing and then made changes to get what you see. Originally the back bars didnt criss-cross and the front bars came down in front of the dash but that was changed. I do all my own work but in the case of the cage its been a couple of my friends who have done the work. Its been a slow process but its turning out great and in the end it will be worth the effort.
