Ok... I'm a tard - Where does the engine hoist go...

On a stock 302 block, is there something I have to buy to lift the engine up with a hoist....IE- Some sort of special thread in bolt/bolts with a loop in them etc...?

FYI- I thought I was superman, Gemballa996t & I tried to lift my long block in to my truck bed......it fell....and broke some head studs.....whoopty fucking dooo....not happy about that. It was my fault though. K /end rant.

Also -

Any one on the East side want to me let me borrow a hoist in the AM and have it returned in the PM for some cash or other wise?

I've got a hoist you can borrow if you still need it. I work tomorrow (Sat), but you can use it on Sunday. It's at my old house in the Loveland/Milford area and I'll be there most of the day Sunday, just shoot me a PM.

Hey Paul, when the engine came from the factory, there were two brackets on the heads, one on each side. One was in the front and the other was on the back. Thats what they used to put the motor in. One of us dayton guys kept a set around for motor swaps, so I'm sure there's a set laying around in someone's garage down there. They make it easier than bolting a chain to the motor, but either way works fine.

without the brackets I mentioned, just find a bolt that fits the front of the head, that will also go through the chain. Put one in the front of the left or right head, and the other in the back of the opposite head and lift from the middle. The easiest is to find these, or come borrow mine, but its a little bit of a drive. These bolt down with the header bolts.

oh yeah, much easier, just use some old head bolts on opposite corners of the block. Not bolts your going to reuse.

If it doesn't have heads on it, put a head bolt through the end of a chain and put the bolt into the block (one on each side of the engine).


Me and Kenny (fordfan) lifted his 347 out of his engine bay. He bolted a chain up similar to how i mentioned and slipped a long bar under it and we pretty much bench pressed it up and out. It was retarded heavy for just a short block but the whole rotating assembly was still in it. I guess a truck would be even harder since you gotta lift it higher.

Also make sure when you put the bolts in that you put the bolts in opposite ends...like the front of the engine on the driver's side and back of the engine on the passenger side. This will balance out the weight and keep it from rolling forward/backward on ya.

Remember to use new head bolts when you put everything back together, especially after using a head bolt to lift the engine out.
