I saw this on the Merkur forum (yeah, there's guys who've put both into Merkurs :eek: ) and thought i'd share it. It's a pretty amazing size difference.

Yeah that's supposed to be one of the mod motors strong points isn't it? The crank is almost completely inside the block whereas the Windsors are a good half way out. I've always heard the mod motor iron blocks can take 1000hp...that's pretty damn impressive for a stock block. It's just too bad they don't pack more cubes. If Ford could figure out a way to make a 6.0 version with DOHC in a package that isn't twice that size it would be potent. With the way the heads flow with some porting, they'd really kick ass on a higher displacement engine.

Ford is going to make a 6.2L engine. I guess we'll see once that hits the market.

The mod motors have plenty of other advantages too. The are sealed up much better. No leaky rear main seal. Stock head gaskets hold nearly 30 psi of boost. Better front accessories mounts. Zero internal balance as well. Not to say they don't have their drawbacks with that size, all that weight up high is not good for handling.

I've had and worked on both, and I think they are both good engines.

Pretty much all the stock blocks will take anything you can throw at it for a street car. I think only the most powerful of race cars have to consider looking else where for a new block. The stock cast crank in the 2V engines and automatic equiped 4V cars is plenty strong too. I haven't seen any reports of breaking one.

The engine is plenty wide though and the bore spacing is terrible. There just isn't room to do a lot displacement wise. I think any major changes will have to be based on an entirely different engine.

The mod motor looks as big as the old Chrysler 426 hemi from back in the day.

Yeah that is a neat picture. I know of a few people using the stock aluminum blocks for insane power. John Mihovetz has over 2000 horsepower on one, and Joey Bridge is making around 1300 or so. They have really good design but cubes is there one true problem. I would love to build a 5.4 DOHC bored and stroked to a 360 N/A would be a mean bizzle;)
