The beginnings of my 66 restore!

I have put pictures on photobucket. I pulled my motor on Sunday after church. I am going to clean up the motor and then begin tearing the sheet metal off and sanding that down. Here's some pics of the beginning. I will keep adding as I move through this.

Good luck with your project. I have my eye on a 65 sitting in my father in laws barn decent shape, I would love to get it and retro fit newer parts to it along with a mild 5.0 liter 5 spd.

That's my ultimate plan. I am not certain where to find a good engine. I run a google, but I'm never certain who I can trust and who I can't. I also have to find out exactly what will need to be done to it. I think I'll need a new suspesion, new transmission and drive train. While I'm in there I should switch to disc brakes. Oh, I can't forget about the pair of dice for the mirror.

Strip it down to a shell and have it soda and sand blasted top too bottom and than tear into it. Seems like a lot of work but hey thats what its all about.

i have a 66 i'm doing for an older gentlman,he bought it from the original owner,i just got $2,300 in parts dropped off ups wendsday,eevry peice of chrome a new drivers quarter panel,new hood,he's also having me do the interior wich looks like brand new still.i'll get some pics up of it

My dad restores about 12 a year. You can buy just about every piece brand new. He's got some unrestorable mustangs but they have disc brakes some have the correct year 289's , air conditioning,some still have the factory 4 speeds. Pm me and I'll give you his number if you'd like to try and get some parts

Now that I have the I6 out, I don't want to put it back in. I have called around about remanufactured engines, and they are close to my price range. It will be a lot cheaper to put in a 302 vs a 289. I am not going for value or to put it on the track. I want something that I can cruise in and pass on to my son when he gets older. This is my very first venture into this kindof stuff. I am probably going to buy all new sheet metal for it. It'll probably be the same price as taking it to somebody to work on. Once it's tore apart I think I'll buy a case of beer and an angle grinder with a wire brush attachment and spend a weekend getting the frame ready. But I think the 302 is the way for me. But again, that's coming from little knowledge.

It's been a while but here are some pics of my restore. I have sold the I6 and 3-speed. I bought a 302 bored to a 306 and a t-5. I have ripped out the old interior. I am ready to start putting together the motor and getting it in the car. I am going to have to wait a bit on the exterior due to money restraints, but it's cool (I'll still be able to drive it!) I am considering going ahead and putting the new interior into without the body being done, but I don't know. I am afraid I'll ruin it. So check out the pics and tell me what you think.

Sounds like you got a plan on getting it running. Hope the shifter will line up with the hole in the tunnel.

My brother has a 65 Mustang that he's had for a long time. He's looked into the whole disk brake swap and knows a bit about those body styles. He's Motorvation on here, I'm just suprised he hasn't seen this yet.

Here's just a few pains I experienced to help you along. Do you have your frame mounts to switch over to the V8? Going from I6 to V8 you need to get a new throttle linkage, and frame/motor mounts. I can't tell from the engine pics, but it doesn't look like the block has the hole to screw the mount in for the Z bar on for the clutch assembly. If you decide to stay with the mechanical clutch I highly recommend to brace the top lever of the Z bar. It gets mushy from exhaust heat and tends to bend especially when a beefier pressure plate is used. There are fixes for every problem you can run in to. It's all been done before.

As for upgrading the suspension, mine was fine for the switch (unless you want it to handle better), but the brakes are really weak. It's a real good idea to upgrade to a dual resivoir as well as discs. It's hard to stop in time when all the cars on the road stop 20-30 feet sooner than you. I've got a set of V8 drum spindles to put a disc kit on it. You can also pick up a set off a Genada. Prices on those has gotten ridiculous though. Feel free to PM me for any help.
