remote start

Good friend of mine got a remote start real inexpensive. How hard are they to install. I am pretty good with automotive wiring. Any ideas, or should he have it done professionally?

tell me the year make and model of his car and I'll tell you what you're getting into.

Fwiw, they're very complicated and if it's a generic unit, I wouldn't even bother to install it. (more problems than it's worth)

Paid 50 bucks for mine and it works great.Easy to install on a fox body.

Generic as in Bulldog, I believe they have a failure rate of about 90%.

Ive installed 3 bulldog systems so far and they all work great.Ive had no problems with them.

You must have gotten lucky, normally you're lucky to find 1 out of 10 that works properly. The last two I did were defective, I won't install them anymore, if someone calls me with one again, I'll send them your way.:bigthumb

Thats cool.I know there cheap and dont cost much,but they do what i need them to.Just start my car and thats it.I would like a more expensive one but id rather have a nitrous kit.And i think i saw the car in your avatar over at Outlaw racing a couple months ago.Is that yours?

That's cool, a lot of the guys I know that do remote starters on the side use MARS brand, they all have nothing but good things to say about them. I've never tried one myself, I use Audiovox/Prestige brand and they are about as trouble free as you can get. You should be able to pick either of those brands up for around the same price as the Bulldog units. The car in my avatar is mine, you probably didn't see mine, I've only driven it about 3 or 4 times in the last 3 months.

I saw some on ebay the other day, and you used to be able to buy them on amazon.com but after searching for them a minute ago, I couldn't find much on there.

It is for a 2002 ford f150.

You either have to give up a key and bury it under the dash or you need a bypass for pats. Either way, F150's are fairly simple. The bypass, btw, is probably cheaper than getting another key.:) I can get you a wiring diagram if you need it for bypassing pats and for hooking up the remote start, unless of course you decide to just take Sharads advice and have a professional do it.

I can ship you the bypass... I've got tons in stock, but usually people aren't brave enough to attempt them by themselves.



On a side note, I've got a ton of Code Alarm brand alarms and remote starts I'd sell CHEAP!!

I totally agree these are crap!!! I installed one on my dad's car, and he had to hold his arm out the front door to be able to start it (and even that wouldn't always work).
