This is the system that I use and will not play either DVD+R or DVD-R. Could it be the way the movies are burn't (using an HP burner that connects into the computer), the DVDs or could it be the player?

I don't want to spend more money trying different DVDs out only to find that it will not work, so hopefully someone in here might now.

Sometimes, depending on the method used to burn the movies, your DVD player has to have the right decompression codecs in it. IE: Download an AVI or MPG then try to burn it on a DVD. In that scenario, your DVD player must have the DIVX codec in it. Some players do, some dont, just have to look on the box.

If you download movies online, your best bet is to try to find images (ISO as they are commonly called) of the DVD. That way, its like making a copy of an original DVD.

Krogers on Wards Corner rd in Loveland has a DVIX enabled dvd player for $40 right now.
