View Full Version : Turbo Fox Guys - Tranny Question

Hey everybody.

My question is simple - Whats the most cost effective method for having a reliable transmission that will see street and very occasional track time. (Once a year maybe?)

My setup will make no more than 530hp and I have 3.73 gears.

The tranny in now is a high mileage T5, I expect it to fail about 10 minutes after my first cruise in it.

Just curious what the *cheapest* but mildly reliable setup is.

Feel free to add any thing that you think I should know.
Thanks Guys :bigthumb

Are you wanting to stay with a 5 speed? If not a decent c4 will hold that amount of power, no sweat. Keep in mind how addictive the power becomes, sometimes its better to spend the money once.

I would like to stay with a 5 speed but it doesn't matter.

What is more important to me is the bang for the buck.

How much can i get a C4 for, and, what modifications will need to be made to go from T5 to C4?

I had a 3550 in my car for a couple of years with 550rwhp and probably made 40 passes on it, spec stage 3 clutch, no problems. If your car is mostly street, that's what I would do, that way you keep overdrive. I switched to a c4 and picked up 3/10's, but now cruising the highway sucks.

I have a AOD in my turbocar. I like how the boost stays on with a auto
versues the stick. Boost drops between shifts.

Would take a "good" AOD to take that power. Input shaft, good V/B and a
good convetor.

My car has 3.27 gear and a 25in tire. It only turns 1700 RPM @ 70MPH

I wore my T5 out and rebuilt it with the G-Force kit and it has been holding up real well. Just curious is your car red and black?

G-Force can take your T-5 and make it handle that kinda power all day. Takes about 1750 bux. Cheaper than a TKO and you get to keep your bell housing, shifter, and drive shaft yoke!

High mileage t-5 works for me.

auto is really the best way to go with a turbo, but for a primarily street use car, a stick would be fun.

I would like a stick, but really, what ever is cheapest.

The cheapest route isn't always the cheapest route. You had enough money to build a 500+hp street car, so save until you have enough money to have the tranny you want.

I guess thats not bad advice.

i have a c4 in mine and it has turbo and i drove it a hour and back and didn't have any problems. i think i may have in it right now about $500 not including a brake or man. valve body. i would say that maybe you should reconsider useing 355 or 327 gears.I had 410 and was running out of gear at the 8th mile and just by changing to 327 i picked up 20mph. just my 2 cents.

AOD transmissions can be built to handle around 800hp IMO, beyond that get a glide. Bolting an AOD to a lima engine will be difficult. AOD's had one bellhousing option. 302/3.8/351, thats it.

So moral of the story, everyone I've talked to says run the C4.

I still want a manual tranny though and I am not willing to drop 2k on a 550...... any other options?

2k? I saw one on here not too long ago for $800, I think it was Kellys. Just search around for other deals.

93 Coupe has a Lentech AOD and the car goes deep in the nines and gets 18 plus on the highway the few times I got to drive my car with the turbo is 50/50 Tremec and then c-4 Tremec more fun on the street , c-4 more fun at the strip you choose ?
