I was discussing with a friend whether or not it is necesarry/cost effective to buy a main girdle and windage tray for a 306 with gt40 heads and intake, with a trick flow stage 1 cam that probably won't be revved past 6 grand. Is it worth installing a windage tray and main girdle? The car may see nitrous in the future and the oil pan is already off the car.

unless you are doing some crazy things to your unit I dont see it being a need.

The widage tray is worth a little power even a good pan with baffles and crank scraper is worth power. Some say the girdle helps some say it doesnt do much.
I would say not at this stage of the game. The jury is still out on main girdles at any power level, but with the HCI you have listed, a girdle would surely be a waste of money. If you are serious about some N20 later then it may be of some value. It's really tough for anyone to say if a girdle actually strengthens anything or not, but I am inclined to think not. I run one, but if I were doing it over I think I would skip it and put that money into the "Good Block" jar. BTW many of the girdles require you to grind or machine the main caps to get them to fit.
I am by no means an engineer, but it appears to me that the amount of slop in the bolt holes in the girdle would negate any strengthening effect that the girdle may have had in the first place.

+1, Don't confuse a windage tray for strength, just power. On my mexican block, I used Milodon main caps without a girdle. I would recommend having your machine shop drill/tap your block for 1/2" head bolts. You can tighten to 105 ft. lbs instead of 85 ft. lbs.

If you are using them for strength use head and main studs.

Since they're clamped down on top of the main caps, there's no movement.
My opinion is that its not needed at this point, but could never hurt anything. If your winging the hell out of it, I'd put one on. If using the stock rev limiter, don't bother.

Thanks guys, doesn't sound like its worth the cost. The windage tray might be though.
