This is a cool story from a SR-71 pilot. :)

A Different Story:

I read about two pilots in a SR-71 returning from a long flight at a leisurely Mach 1.2. They asked permission to fly through French air space to save some time. They were denied.

They decided to continue through France anyway. A few minutes later, a French fighter jet was flying eight feet from their wingtip. The French pilot asked them for their dipolomatic immunity number. They stalled by pretending to look through some paperwork.

The SR-71 copilot said to his pilot, "Let's go. I gave him a hand signal for the diplomatic number!" The SR-71 pilot quickly accelerated to Mach 3 and left the Frenchie mumbling to himself.

How awesome would that be, to be able to tell a story like that? Luckiest mofos in the world. I love those planes.

That story kicks ass!! That'd have to the best job on the planet. I remember watching a documentary on the plane, they were interviewing an older man who was the pilot. He was telling the story about using his new camera to take some footage when they got "lit up" by a missle, they continued getting their footage till the mission was complete and then outran the missle! I remember geeking over how cool that must've been!!

'Skunk Works' by Ben Rich is a fantastic book. He replaced Kelly Johnson and describes in detail the difficulties of working with the then new material, titanium. He also tells about the CIA setting up fake companies all over the world to buy mass quantities of titanium. The worlds biggest supplier of titanium is.......Russia.

He told of a story of some Russians shooting at a SR-71 with surface to air missiles. The Russians added a 30 MILE lead to the aiming point of the missile. They missed.

The closest a missile ever got to a SR-71 was a couple of miles (IIRC).
