Goodness I need a better camera. Well, It is in pretty good shape for an 81. Yes it is an 81. It has an 86 nose and fenders on it. Those will stay. The trunk lid is a whole nother story. It seems they put a GT wing on it and bondoed it smooth. It is cracked, and there is so much bondo in it, the trunk won't stay up. I am going to try to knock it off and sand it first but I may have to use the one from the vert. The underside is what has me a little worried. It is a little rusty. Most of it looks to be surface, but there are some holes here and there. I will post often when I get stuff done, I promise.
Keith

It's been my experience that once you own a coupe and drive one for a good amount of time, you pretty much don't want a hatch ever again :D

I would love to have a '93 Cobra or a Cobra clone, but aside from that or an SVO, i'm all coupe.

Check the underside for any place that is rotted enough to need replaced, and the POR15 the whole underside. That stuff can go on over rust and is like armor plating.

DeckerEnt
08-07-2007, 09:46 AM
Armor plating sounds good. Where can I get por15 around here? Ky motors paint store or do I have to call Eastwood for it?

I am not sure. I pretty much buy a case of quart cans every year at the columbus super swap. Make sure you where rubber gloves and don't get any of that stuff on you. It DOES NOT come off at all. Also put a peice of plastic wrap between the can and the lid if you don't use it all. You will never get the can back open if you don't. Also don't use it on external body parts. It is a bitch to sand.

I know the KOI paint store has Chassis Saver which I believe is very similar. That is what I used if you want to look at it when you come over. If no one local sells por15 I know they have a website they sell it at.

I was just looking at my coupe tonight and saw that I am going to have to weld in some bracing under the hood. The front frame rails are ate up pretty bad and the strut towers could use some help too. Too bad Jesse and Rick took the front frame rails off the vert tonight. But seeing how much work it was just getting themoff, I am going to go the weld in patches and hope it helps. What guage metal should I use? I can get 2x3 sheets from tractor supply. I have a wire fed mig welder. Not the best but it is something.
I also glanced underneath again and am probably going to spend alot of time scraping, grinding, and sanding before a good thick coat of por15 or chassis saver. Then paint it black. The vert goes on wednsday so work will begin on the coupe wed night.
Keith
Almost forgot. In the clear coat is some sort of flake that changes color. I am going to call it mystic flake.

I use 1/16 plate steel I buy up the street at a metal store. I had to fix a guy's 85 GT because the rails were really rusty. Just cut out the rust and then butt weld the plates in. Should look good if you grind the welds smooth.

DeckerEnt
08-14-2007, 03:04 AM
I thinkI will get really good at welding with this car. I think also that por15 or chassis saver will be my best friend on this one. I want to do it right.

I crawled around under the coupe tonight. Man there is a lot of rust. A lot of it will be removed. Fuel lines, rear end, but some things need replaced. The floorboard where it meets the firewall is split pretty good. The rear frame rails need some bracing of some kind, the area for the emergency brake, brake lines, all that stuff needs some work.
My wire brush is doing a good job of identifying the bad parts. I have a wire wheel for my drill too. Will use that next time. The more I see, the lower my heart sinks into my chest. I see a whole lot of work a head of me.

DeckerEnt
08-22-2007, 12:08 AM
I will look into one of those. Have the angle grinder so a wire wheel is a good addition to my tool box. I still have your struts. Are you going to QS&L on sunday? I could bring them?

I got under the coupe tonight for a few. I used a drill and a wire wheel. To my suprise, the rust is mostly surface. I think once I go over the entire underside and find any holes, weld up some patch panels here and there, it will be ready for some por15 or chasis saver, then black paint. I really need to get the gas tank, lines, and rear end, control arms out. Plus all the wires and brake lines too. It is going to be a major project but one step at a time.

DeckerEnt
08-26-2007, 01:00 AM
Well, Got some stuff done and found out some stuff.
Got the old fuel lines and wires to the tank out. Grinded on some more areas under the beast. Found out that chasis saver is indeed black and costs 24-25 bucks a quart. The guy at Ky motors paint dept said I would probably need 3 so I will be getting 2 and going from there. Also I got a full face shield. From Ky motors paint shop for 18 bucks. Much better grinding now. Just have to keep it on my head while flat on my back. That statement is just wrong if it were anything but working under a car.
Most of the thick scale I am running over is coming right off and there is good metal under it. I think all I have to do is paint it all with a good coat of chasis saver and then move on to better more fun stuff.
More next time..

so how bad are the floors so far? I just came back in from taking out the transmission on my '88 and discovered a nice 8x8 square of rot up by the drivers front floor to the left of the frame rail on my car :(

And i found the common fox body floor crack on the passenger side... and damn is it long... guess my new welder will come in more handy than i thought... although my car had sat in a back yard for several years before it became Stangman_5's, Ricks_85_gt's, then mine, its suprisingly not that bad, i can still see the factory red... hope everything is going smoothly on the coupe thus far... dont get discouraged, thats the worst thing you can do, thats why my car is moving soo slow right now.

DeckerEnt
08-28-2007, 11:36 PM
Well, I have some more elbow, knee, forehead room under the coupe now! I went to home depot and got 12 concrete pavers. Each is 2 inches thick. I put 3 under each jack stand. Damn that thing is in the air now but it will be so much easier to grind on.
If it wasn't so hot, I would be working on it right as I get off work around 4-6 or so. But my shop is like an oven when both work trucks are inside. Hot as hell in here.
Keith

Stangman
08-28-2007, 11:41 PM

5 years does weird things to the underside of a car. Oh, I found a pint of corrolass from eastwood at my shop. It is a rust converter or something like that. I used it on my old Charger back in the day. This stuff has to be 10 years old. I have been shaking the can all day and will shake it all day tomorrow too. I opened it and it is real not thick like paint is supposed to be. I think if I shake it enough, it will thicken and I will use it on the underside of my coupe. Just a thought.

We got alot done on the cars last night. Kevin worked on the pile and I worked on the coupe. I got the crusty 7.5 rear out. That was a Bitch. All the bolts were rusted in place. I sprayed them all with penetrating oil weeks ago, many times but they were still stuck. A pry bar, an impact, and leverage finally broke them all loose. Now to put it in the pile so I can junk it.
About the pile. Remember I got it for 100.00. Well, we are finding all sorts of goodies in it. It had the good computer, a Ford Motorsports quadrant on the clutch pedal, mostly last model wiring, the upper and lower intakes are 93 Cobra peices which have been ported. The heads are bolted on with ARP bolts. Makes me wonder how the motor was built. I am not going to take the motor apart because it did not smoke and ran well when I did drive it. This is for Matt Johnson, the red door panels are for crank windows. Matt, stop down some evening and take them off before I crush it.
I keep promising to get pics and I think I have figured out how to post them so they will be coming soon.
I made a deal with my Bro to keep the coupe inside over the winter so from new years till easter I will have tons of time to geet it together.
That's all for now.

I have an idea for my exaust for the coupe. I was looking at my H pipe today and I think I am going to basically cut out the H part, and make it a box by welding pipe fore and aft, then cutting the inside of the pipes out, then welding plate steel on top and bottom. If I angle the welded in pipe halfs, I think the sound will be unique.

I got some stuff done today. Only broke 1 bolt but got the lower control arms off the coupe and got the 7.5 hung under the pile. Springs and all. The coupe drew blood today. My pinky finger on my right hand was gushing a little. It is all better now.
I have to get the pile out of my shop tonight cause it looks to get down to freezing and I can't let my work truck get that cold. The pile will have to go on the trailer so all the stuff I need from it must come off soon. I would like to remove all the stuff while I still have a concrete floor and air tools. Don't remember the last nap I had. Oh well.
I got some more pics of the pile uploaded on my picturetrail account. There is a link so scroll up for it. I am so frustrated right now. I am working on the pile and have all but one f'n bolt out from the fuel lines. This one is bolted from inside and the nut is under. It is spinning the bolt and I am here alone with no one to hold the bolt. I am ready to get out the buzz box, not the keystone, and tack all the bolts in the car.

I will get the last bolt and the tank out early this week and crush the thing soon.

Well, I intended to take the pile to the crusher on Tuesday but time ran out. My little boy, 4.5 yrs old, had an MRI at Children's Hospital in the morning so I thought I would have time but I didn't so the pile will leave this earth as we know it sometime next week. It will be in little bitty peices before I leave the lot. It is all ready to go. Full of all the metal parts I could find laying around the shop. I still need to get the trunk lid off the coupe and add it to the pile but as of right now, it is ready to go. I will try to get video of the pile getting picked up off the trailer and dropped on the convayor to get chopped up. We got a new camcorder that taked digital video that I can put on my new laptop so it should be easy.
Till next post...

I am tearing into the coupe tonight. I got the blue seats out and the tracks off of them. Also got the old carpet out. Only found one problem with the floor. The plug in the driver's rear floor. It is rusted out but only in the middle of the oval. Where can I get a new one? This is one thing I should have saved from the vert or the pile but who knew.
The floorboards are white. That is a good indication that it was an original white car. Maybe I will paint it white with some Platedesque grafics. Who knows about that. The color will probably change in my head a hundred times before it is time for that.
I found a ton of change. Mostly pennys. All green and corroded. I will put them in my case cleaner for an hour or so and see what I got.
Well, more later.

Then I pressure washed under the hood and the trans tunnel. All that grease and oil is gone. Then I washed the car. The first time I actually washed it since I got it. It looks good now. Thanks Kevin for the keyrocks and the help with everything. Next is painting the underside with the chasis saver and some welding, Yo Matt, then it is wiring and assembly. On another note, follow the directions on the chasis saver and wear gloves. I had been using nitrile rubber gloves and it helped. Still got the stuff all over my face, fore arms and fingers. It doesn't want to come off. I got most of it off my face using the stuff from work to get oil and grease spots from carpet. My face will hurt tomorrow I am sure. Gojo hand cleaner has no effect on this stuff for my hands and fore arms. Wear long sleeves of a shirt you want to throw away and use a face shield if you want your face clean afterwards.

Well, I got a little more done on the coupe tonight. I cleared everything out of the trunk and found a few rust holes that need some patching. I may just cut some pieces, lay them over the holes, and chasis saver them from both sides to lock them in place forever. This stuff is killer. Didn't paint anything tonight though. I did get the last bit of wiring out from the trunk. I found something. The car is an 81 so to put 86 tail lights in it, the guy cut out the original panel to fit the electrics, and spot welded a new panel from the outside to mount the tail lights. It was done right as far as I can tell. I am leaving it alone. Also my back seat back and bottom seat are black and are perfect. So is the rear side molding panels. Just need a good cleaning.
That's all for tonight.

Me and Kevin went out to the u pull and pay junk yard near Cincy Speed today. Kevin found what he was looking for and I got a perfect cowl vent cover thing that hides the wiper stuff. That place is nice. Gravel and all the cars are up on rims so you can get under them easily. They only had 3 fox bodies there, all 4 cyl cars but one is a notch. We got a few things off that one. Another one has a perfect gray dash that Matt is looking for. I may be working on the coupe tonight. If I get my house ready for my daughter's B Day sleepover party, Then I will be here at my shop. Delved into the trunk tonight. There were small rust holes at the bottom of the spare tire well. I painted it heavy with the chassis saver and then cut pieces of sheet steel and placed them over the holes pounding them to fit just right. Then coated the pieces well. When it dries, I will pound them down better and paint them again from the top as well as the bottom. That should take care of all the rust issues in the trunk. I will seal up the plug in the driver's side floorboard the same way and then it is under hood welding time. Then I can start the re-assembly process. Can't wait. The puter at the shop was giving me a fit so I will post pics in the AM.

The rust in the passenger side frame is all the way through. I now must pull the K member out and weld up the frame rail. I have the sheet steel and my brother thinks as soon as I get the k member out and clean up the area, we both can weld it up. I am not looking forward to dropping the k member. I may get some time tomorrow to start dropping the k member out. I have the rear tires still on the dollies and the front is resting on the jack stands as far as they will go. The ONLY good part I see in this part of the project is that I get to put all new stuff in the front end. Struts, spindles, bushings, ball joints, bearings, bigger brakes, and shore up the rust issues under the hood.
I may start a ned set of pics for this on the PT account. Stay tuned.

Keith it should take you less than an hour to drop the front stuff out. 2 nuts on the struts and and either 6 or 8 on the k-member, cant remember for sure, and the whole front is out. As for the springs I just usually take ratchet straps wrapped around the springs and down thru the a arm a couple times and then wratchet them snug. It is much easier than you probably realize.

Well the bad news just keeps coming with the coupe. I posted a few pics in a new album. I will be dropping the K member to get to the rust areas. I think I will have to either get some 2X3 tube and weld that in place or go to a pick your part and cut sections from a car and weld that in. Either way, I need to get moving on this. I am going to be uploading pics from each day I work on it so stay tuned.

My fear with the coil springs was all for nothing!!!! I poped them out this afternoon with no problems at all. You should have seen it though. I had the jack under the control arm, I was loosening the 3 bolts at the top of the strut tower one turn at a time thinking the car was going to buck off the jackstands. I had a towing strap looped through the coil spring like 3 times and wrapped tight around the lower control arm. The strut poped down, no bucking or movement at all, then I took a long pry bar and poped the spring off the lower perch. All that worry for nothing. Did the other side in a few minutes. All that is holding the kmember in is the 4 bolts above the coil spring area. I got em soaking in penetrating fluid. I will try to get those out after my next job. I am so relieved.

Well,my brother hot a wild hair up his butt saturday and decided to help me with the coupe. We cut the bolts on the driver's side k member and got it out of the car. Then he suprised me and started getting the fenders and nose off. The bumper as well. I had to leave so after I got out of there, he continued to work. My plans have changed a little. I think I am going to cut out all the rust, cut the bottom of the frame rails off, and slide the new tubing inside the original frame rail and weld it all together, use sheet steel for the strut tower using a little thicker metal than factory, and weld all that together too.More later when I get more time to take pics and grind some more.

Did some cutting on the coupe today. I will take a few pics and post em in a few. I need a spot weld drill bit. Need to get all the frame rail out and I don't want to just cut the whole thing so spot welds have to go.
Worked on my K member today too. Got 3 of the 4 bolts out of the control arms. The last one is being a real bitch. I think I am going to have to cut the head off the bolt to get it off. I have a line on some stockers with poly bushings and new ball joints. Once I get the arms off, I am going to grind, scrape and paint mine. It is a stock k member so should I weld on it anywhere to make it stronger? It won't be going back in permanantly any time soon so I have time to play.

Anyone want to stop by the shop tonight and give me a hand with the coupe? I have a spot weld cutter and I am going to find out how to use it. I also need to paint the rest of the k member. As soon as I get my little one to bed, I will be heading down. PM me if you can make it.

That spot weld cutter works wonders. I was able to get rid of the rest of the frame rail to the firewall with almost no effort at all. I had to cut out a bunch more than I liked to forward of the k member attaching point but I got my 2x3 tubing in on the passenger side. I will cut sheet metal and join the strut tower with the tube after I get the k member bolted in square. I am so pleased with getting this part done. I got the k member painted too. Gun metal gray is going to be a killer color. Pics are posted. Check em out. Oh, no one showed up so I did this all on my own. LOL

I am trying. Next is tacking the new tube in place and bolting up the k member and getting it straight. Then I will do the driver's side. That one is no where near as bad but I will probably cut out just as much so it is as strong as the other side.

Thanks guys. I just started drilling and cutting last night and when the smoke cleared, there was a new frame rail. The spot weld cutter made it easier. Now to get the other side done so I can start putting this thing back together.

If you got the tools, go out and do something. Anything. I need a welder. A good one. Got a cheap buzz box but that will have to do. I will get everything tacked in place but the major stuff needs a gas welder.

As usual, no one showed up to help so I lifted the K member up to the frame. I loosly put bolts in the 4 rear mounting points and one in the front driver's side. I think it is lined up pretty straight. I posted 6 pics so check em out. I painted the K member the same as I will paint the car. Gunmetal Gray Metalic. I like it.

My Daughter, Lexi and I are down here tonight. I am getting ready to drill some holes in the new frame rail I put in. I have the k member lined up straight, have figured where the bolt needs to go, center punched it, and am getting ready to use a metal cutting hole saw. I am cutting a 7/8th inch hole. I will be using iron pipe that is 7/8th inch. I already test fitted it with wood. The pipe fits with very little wiggle room. I should be able to weld the pipe inside the 2x3 tube from the top and bottom. The bolt fits through the pipe with a little wiggle room. Wish me luck. I will take a few pics and post them later.

I am down here again. Gonna get some stuff done tonight. My goal is to get the rest of what ever I can unbolt or cut out from under the hood. Then grind some on the driver's side. Find what needs to be cut out and maybe do that to. Last time, I put in the passenger side 2x3 tube. Who knows this time. I did have a rough day at work.

I got a little done tonight. I am just wiped out. I got the proportioning valve off, most of the old brake lines, the wiper motor, the old hood hinges, a few plastic clips here and there, and the old throttle cable. I then put the wire wheel on the drill and grinded on the firewall, and inner strut towers. I took a few pics so check them out. I am going to finish this Ice Cold Sam Adams White Ale and go home. Till next time.

I think I went crazy tonight. I pulled the nose piece out of the coupe and sanded it down, then painted it. Gun metal gray is going to be a sweet color. I am not going to post any pics because it is not ready for that yet. I will have to touch up the fenders and hood before they go back on. All I can say is that the gray is sooooo much better than the white.

Well, the nose piece didn't turn out as well as I thought. I sanded it with 80 grit to feather in the busted paint. Then I thought I smoothed it all with 320 grit. After I painted it, it looked good. Well it is dry now and looks like shit. I am going to get some high build primer, spray it, then sand it with 1200 grit, then spray it again with the gun metal. I will do the same with the white and silver on the hood and fenders. Gun metal into purple won't be too bad till I can get the whole car painted.
Keith

PonymanfiveO

80 is too course for a plastic bumper. Some good primer should cover 320 no problem.

BTW Keith do you have an angle grinder?

DeckerEnt
04-17-2008, 11:16 PM
Yes but I didn't use it. I had an air powered whiz wheel. Just like the one you and rick used. I got all the pieces cut out today. Now I have to form them all in place and tack them in. Progress is slow but still moving along.
