i just bought a 1992 ford ranger 2.3 L 4x4. It started acting up a little bit sputtering then died. I bought the basic tune up items and got it to start then after a few seconds it fell on its face. The fuel pump kicks on but sounds funny does it mean its working if you hear it???? or can it be bad and still here it kick on when the key is on?
Any ideas would be great im going to get a fuel pump tom if it has spark when i test it tom.

checkthe fuel filter, it could be clogged and puttin a strain on the pump

Take off the tank and clean it with good fuel, then clean your throttlebody with cleaner.

ok update... I got it running turns out i accidently halfway unplugged the module on the distributor! DOH!!!! but anyways it has a real bad miss still could the 2 horrible exhaust leaks by the manifold be causing this due to low back pressure?!?

just curious if the exhaust leaks would make it run crappy. Cause theyre pretty bad right at the manifold.

leaks that close will cause the power to drop, but in the numerous 2.3 (and 2.3t) vehicles ive had, ive not had one miss because of the exhaust. have you checked the fuel filter?

i changed the fuel filter it needed it. Its a 2.9L 4X4 by the way dunno why i put 2.3. and its one of those deals where it runs good for a min then acts like it has sudden power loss. hard to explain. i figured it was just the leaks though cause this is what ive done
New plugs and wires
new cap and rotor button
new fuel filter
new coil
so i was assuming the exhaust leaks were it.

i would say th best way to describe the problem is the more gas i give it the more it wants to bog down. If i barley give it gas runs smooth. So what might be a source of that?!?
Refer to last post to what ive done already to knock those out of the way

I would question if spark is advancing or not. That TFI system is touchy. My bronco II had that problem and it was a bad ground.
